I've been reading through some of the other blogs and discussions here and some of the comments make me...curious. I see a lot of questions about supplements for both weight loss and weight gain. As a registered dietitian, I don't believe that these products work nor are they healthy even if they do work. Here are some things I would like to try to clarify:
1. No pill is going to healthily going to give you more energy. B vitamins supplements do not provide energy or calories. B vitamins do help your body utilize the food and energy in your diet, but they do not provide anything extra. Most diets provide enough B vitamins to be healthy. A supplement is not necessary for most people who eat a variety of foods. Vegans are really the group who may need to supplement some of their vitamins and minerals.
There are some products on the market that claim to give more energy. The FDA does not regulate supplements and so there are no studies on them. The companies can claim anything they want. The supplement may not even contain what they say they do, so it is important to trust reliable brands and not fall into traps. If it sounds too good to be true, then it probably is. Be careful!
More energy can be found easily with better hydration. Water can act as a miracle tool.
2. Bodies are different. No amount of diet or exercise can change your body genetics. Losing weight will not necessarily change the shape of your natural curves or lack thereof. Excericse and strength training can possibly change some shapes of the body. Not all runners are going to look alike, so we can't beat ourselves up over some of the things we cannot change. We can be healthy and look very different. We need to judge our health on a personnal level and not compare ourselves to others.
Losing weight during training is especially dangerous. We need proper energy and nutrition to build muscle and gain endurance. Training can go awry without nutrition and hydration. A balanced diet of carbohydrate, protein and fat is important. Any diet which limits any of these can be dangerous and strenuous on the body. Athletes need carbohydrate, protein and fat in a nice balance in order to achieve optimal results.
Too little or too much of anything can have its faults.
