Jesse Tubb and I rode into Xterra Ex2with a plan to pull a Shake in Bake. I went after the Tri Solo to chase more points to qualify for the USA Championship. While Jesse hit the Duathlon to chase a spot on the podium. Lucky it all came together for us. I took 2nd in the age group getting 67 points and Jesse nailed the 1st place spot on the podium.
This was my 3rd Xterra for the season. I was 2nd in the US point standings Atlantic region, only one point behind 1st place. Everything was set for a great race, course was dry, sun was out, the Superfly 100 was looking, and I was feeling fast. That might have just been the 2 large cups of coffee.
On the first lap of the swim I saw some nasty toes go by and knew right way it was Eric Sorensen. I jumped on his toes, knowing he would have a fast pace. I checked my pace time on Suunto t6d on the short run between swim laps. I was a little ahead of pace but felt good. I could not keep up with Eric and was on my own for the 2nd lap. I hit T1 and jumped on my Trek Superfly 100and was out on the bike. The Suunto bike pod engaged and I was right on pace. I was confident going into the bike as I had done Ex2Aventures 9hr Cranky Monkey race on the same course 2 months earlier. I rode smart and had no problems. A quick dash in and out of T2 I slipped on my K-Swiss Keahou with the Sunnto foot pod. I was running down the 5 remaining miles. I took a moderate pace for the first 3 miles. As mile 3 to 4 has you scrambling down rock's and crawling backup the other side. Then I opened it up for the run into the finish.
My nutrition was right on. I had a bar at the being of the bike and GU Roctane gel at the end of the bike. On the run I had a GU Roctane at miles 2 and 4. I sucked back a bottle or two of the course Gatorade.
Crossing the finish in 2nd place gave me enough points to be ranked 1st in the Xterra Atlantic region and 13th nationwide.
I found Jesse in 1st for the Duathlon age group and 2nd overall. We could not be happier with how our day went.
I am racing my 3rd Xterra tomorrow for the season. Xterra is a point series to earn a spot for the USA Championship. I am currently ranked 2nd in the Atlantic region. One point behind the first place holder. Hopefully tomorrow will bring me that needed point.
The Trek Superfly 100 is ready to go. I double checked everything and had my last shakeout ride Thursday. I could not be happier with performance of the bike. For my riding style the Superfly 29'er has definitely made me a faster rider.
I have made some adjustments in my transition setup. I will cover my T1 and T2 in a YouTube video next week. I have dialed in my nutrition with GU Energy gels. I have a triple threat bar at the start of the bike,GU Roctane at the end of the bike, and a GU Roctance every 2miles of the run. I wash it all down with GU Brew and try to finish at least 2 bottles.
The results should be out in a few days and I will post another update and video.
I came to Ann Arbor hoping for a great race. Everything came together for me.. Finally no flat tires. The Trek Superfly 100 was the right bike for this fast course. I had a great run and to my surprise 1st place was mine.
This was my 2nd Xterra of the season and the 1st place points put me on the path to the USA Championships.
Eagleman Half Ironman was my 9th half ironman finish. Each race has presented its own challenges for me. Today's challenge was another flat tire and the brutal heat.
The flat tire was overwhelming disappointing as it was my 3rd flat in the last 3 races. Time to pack up my toys and go home. Sometimes its not about the sacrifices you make to be at the starting line but just good luck.
I will be in search of some good luck for my tires.
I'm headed out today for a pre-ride before tomorrows race. If you get the chance to ride at the Reveille Peak Ranch do yourself a favor and get out there. It's a great facility and some of the best single track around. A lot of trails have just one element to offer, twist, rollers, flat, climbs, etc... Not the Reveille it has a trail to offer whatever gets you excited.
This is my first Xterra for the season. I will use it to dial-in my equipment and get a feel for my fitness level. I will be racing on my new Trek Fisher SuperFly 100 29'er. Looks like the trail will be fast, flowing, rocking, with a few climbs. I'll set the bike up today as I go, but my guess will be a tight suspension for fast, flowy and climbs.

Kimani and I pedaled into the Ex2Adventures 9hr Cranky Monkey race with a expectation to have fun. First or last as long as we had fun getting there. Between us we hammered out 11 laps of fun. I could not have pedaled with a better partner. We are already discussing what in next on the duo team race schedule.
Half Ironman Championship started like any 70.3 miles of swim, bike, run! It was 4:30am on Nov 13th, I was having my standard pre-race breakfast, EAS Myoplex Lite ready to drink shake, banana and 2 cups of coffee. I got to transition by 5:15am. A quick check on the Trek TTX I was all set. This was a clean transition race. Bike bags and Run bags had been dropped off the day before. There was no setup to be done other then a little air in the tires.
I grabbed the Xterra Vector Pro wetsuit to make my way over to the swim start for a few warm up laps. I was feeling good, feeling fast. At least I was thinking fast thoughts. As always, 30 minutes before go time, I have my EAS Lite nutrition bar. I lined up on the inside right, thinking I would avoid some of the crowd. Little did I know I was down stream from the current. I spent the going out swim leg fighting to stay on the swim course. A quick run through T1 I was jumping on the TTX.
I took it easy the first half and pedaled like a mad man on the way back. Being on the Trek TTX and a little tail wind did not hurt either. My bike splits had me at 22.48 first half and 24.95 coming home.
Soon I was on the run. I was putting down the miles in my new K-Swiss Ultra-Ntrl Runii. I had been looking for some racing flat style shoes. Jon Siebrecht from K-Swiss helped me find the right pair a few days before at the Ironman expo. I started out a little fast and found my pace after a few miles. My good friends Jon & Linda Ann were cheering me on from top of the bridge with each pass. Even when I was hurting I had to at least make it look easy, while running past them. I dug deep and found the kick for the finish line.
Sept 5th, 2010 stated like any Sunday morning mountain bike ride....650 friends, 100 miles to go, and almost 10,000ft of climbing. It was time for the Shenandoah 100. Alexander Castro, Kimani Nielsen and I started together but soon become separated by the mass start. I just stuck to the plan pedal, pedal I did. Remember when all least fails, your hurting, your hungry, out of water, and full of pain just pedal. Everyone has their mantra, might was "keep pedaling".
This was the most punishment I have had on a bike, physically, mentally and emotionally. I would not trade those 10hrs for anything. I would rather be on the trail with good friends any day.
I rode the Trek Fuel 9.8 and would not change a thing. I had the rear suspension on firm, maybe I would have set it in the middle to soften up some of the trail abuse while descending.
I had my Camelpak loaded. I would ride with half a bladder instead of full. My thinking is the light load would payoff. They aid stations where so fast to re-fill not time was lost. Nutrition, I would light my load there to. Only 1 or 2 bars and gel's. The aid station had everything you need, not carry the extra weight. Of course throw in a couple of the Kimani rice cake, there is always room for those little bundles of goodness.
I had consulted with anyone I could find who had traveled with a bike. For every success story of shipping or flying with a bike had an equal story of broken parts and bikes. In my search I only came across positive results of flying your bike using the Biospeed Travel Case.
I followed the packing instructions to the letter. I used some of the packing tips from the Pros. The airline did not asking any questions going but on the way back they hit me with large bag fees. I have a call into customer service asking for a fee refund. We'll see what happens.
Once everything was strapped in I used the Pro tips, zipped tied the chain to the big ring and placed foam pipe tubing on everything.
I used rubber bands around the brake levels to close them and keep them low profile. The shift levels are in the middle position to keep them covered w/ the foam piping.
After everything was in place, I took a sheet of large bubble wrap, placed it over the top and down each side. I had two foam shipping blocks, I placed one over the top of the seat mast and the other over the top of the stem. The Trek TTX made it from NoVa to Austin and back without a scratch.
