Audiobooks while running?

I've never tried it but certainly have given it some thought. I'm wondering if anyone out there has listened to an audiobook while working out? Did you find it hard to concentrate on the story or the physical activity? Please describe your experience with the rest of us. Thanks!

It's an interesting idea and I've never done it, but I know my Dad used to listen to audio books on his daily walks for 45-60 minutes. It's not a bad idea and especially if it's a more low key workout.

I have never tried it but have recently considered it. I want to learn how to speak German and thought that maybe I could save some time by listening to the audio tracks while on the bike or something. I'm pretty sure one of the activities would suffer, but I might give it a shot in the near future anyway to see how it goes.

Re: Audiobooks while running?
I've listened to books-on-tape and podcasts during recovery days while I'm doing an easy spin or elliptical session and have found that to be enjoyable, but I can't get used to headphones when I'm actually running. Besides, I have such a poor sense of direction that I'd surely become distracted by a halfway decent story and end up hopelessly lost and miles from home. I have tried watching movies while using a tread mill, however, and I have certainly noticed that I can only handle mindless action flicks since my brain can't seem to follow any sort of drama or substantial plot during a rigorous workout (so I would fall into the "hard to concentrate on the story" group).

Re: Audiobooks while running?
I have done the audiobooks and have had mixed results, I've only done it on a treadmill. During an exciting part with alot of action its great, takes your mind off the distance and you listen intently. The issue is the boring parts, the parts when your supposed to pay attention I find my mind wondering or looking at the time and calculating how much longer i have to run and then miss important info, or if its real dull chapter I dread slogging through it and that makes the run seem longer and more tiring.

Books that I've done it with are the Harry Potter series, Bourn series, Angels and Demons, DaVinci Code, and a couple Stephen King ones like Carrie. Like I said the results are mixed but sometimes it reeally breaks up the monotony of only listening to the same music tracks.

I have tried this before, but to be honest I didn't really enjoy it. For me, music while running is a way to get into a rhythm, which is difficult with audiobooks. On my distance runs I try not to even bring my ipod in order to focus more on breathing.

Re: Audiobooks while running?
i find audiobooks the only way to distract myself when i have to use a treadmill due to weather constraints - which luckily is hardly ever. I have an old cassette player, and my local library has tons of books on tape - really helps to make the time go by...
