What do you like to sail?

I have spent the majority of my time sailing on sunfish boats and really enjoy it. They are small and relatively easy to sail. We used to actually enjoy capsizing them and scrambling to turn the boat back over, which is probably not the best idea, but we were young and probably dumb. I don't recommend doing this so please don't come to me when you capsize your boat on purpose and it sinks to the bottom. Lasers are on the top of my list too. I also enjoyed the Flying Scot sailboats we used to take out. They are bigger and a completely different experience. The sunfish is less stressful in my opinion.

I have a Lindenberg 26, which is a nice, fast, comewhat comfy daysailor. I like it okay, but would prefer something a bit bigger.

I raced Lasers in College and still think it's one of the best boats to sail....it's borderline windsurfing!!

A 30-33 footer would be ideal for mixed racing and cruising. I like 33 feet because the Annapolis-Bermuda race has a 32-foot minimum length, though I suspect that ride 33 footer would be painful.

Lasers are a blast. But as I get older (and stiffer in the joints), I need more room!

Re: What do you like to sail?

My family used to have a Hobie Cat and I grew up sailing on that for the most part. It's definitely fun. You can get some good speed going on these boats. The sails can be bigger then boats of a similar size since the base is larger. I would recommend these. I've also sailed sunfish and lasers....been on some larger boats, but was never in charge of sailing them.

I sailed the Annapolis-Bermuda race waaaay bak in 1986. It was awesome. I was on a  37 footer and we came in third in class, sixth overall. The race took 5 days. The bigger boats are getting done now in 3-4 depending on the wind.

Re: What do you like to sail?

I saild the 2000 Pacific Cup in an Aerodyne 38.  The boat is great for the 'downhill' sail to Hawaii...we were screaming down the face of waves when we hit the trades.  It's a great < 40' performance boat.  But the bulb makes it a pain if you sail in kelpy waters (like we're prone to in San Diego).

CATAMARANS ARE WHERE ITS AT!

They are fun, fast, and there is NOTHING like flying the hull 5 feet up....

I live on a 48 foot sailboat, race J24s, and J105s in in San Francisco Bay. I have sailed Optis, FJs, and lasers. I just bought my own laser to race with.

Yeah, racing is great. I like all types of sailing, but you just can't get the rush that you feel when you are doing everything right and you start to pass other boats anywhere else.
