Okay, wiser ones. What makes a given run or workout, a tempo run, how do I plan one and how would I add such runs to my training schedule, in general?
Yes, I suppose I could Google around until I found out but you all are lots more friendly than a search engine!!

Generally speaking, its a run with a slow warm up in the beginning, a fast paced middle section, and a slow cool down at the end.
An example would be a mile warm up, 20 minutes at your tempo pace, and then a mile cool down.
I like to use this site to set a goal for the pace of the tempo interval: http://www.mcmillanrunning.com/mcmillanrunningcalculator.htm
Some people use a heart rate monitor and try to maintain a % or their max heart rate.
There is one definition on this page but there are some slightly differing opinions on what is meant by the term and how it should be run:
2010 Space Coast Marathon 4:27:39
2011 Charleston Marathon 4:25:58
2011 Croom Fools Run 50k 6:16:51
2011 Marine Corps Marathon 4:24:48
2011 Jacksonville Bank Marathon 4:44:12 (4:45 Pace Leader)
2012 Florida Keys Ragnar Relay 28:20:47 (3rd place-Mixed Ultra)
