Running tops with POCKETS???  a rarity? really?

Hi Experts!

I have been a lurker here for a while but desperation has forced me out of hiding!!

I am on a quest for running shirts (tanks, short sleeved and long sleeved) that have pockets.  I am striking out locally and it's a huge task to look at each individual top online to see if it has pockets.  I have begun to hate my armband (Ironman brand) for my cellphone and would rather just have pockets available for my short runs.

Please send me your recommendations for any semifitted top with a secure pocket, my sanity depends on it!!  TIA!

I haven't seen womens' running tops with pockets (except for jackets) but you might want to check out some cycling tops. They often have built-in pockets and I don't see a reason why they couldn't be used for running.

Re: Running tops with POCKETS??? a rarity? really?

I used to work at a sporting goods retail store, and it always amazed me how few clothes (shorts included) had pockets!! I can't really offer advice, I don't have any shirts with pockets sadly.  I do own a pair of capri's with a zip pocket in the top that is really handy, but obviously I can't wear them every single run (plus they were pricey).

The only thing I can suggest is using a Spi-belt.  They strap around your waist, and they're really small to start and then stretch to hold your phone, keys, etc.  I don't actually use one, but everyone I've talked to with one says they don't bounce or anything.

They run around $22, here's the link.  Hope this helps, wish I had more advice but I lock everything in my car and just carry the small key with me on runs.

I've got one Asics hoodie that I'm not particularily fond of but it has pockets. Then I have a Salomon LS that has a pocket in front and pocket in the back. Another one is Adidas that has a back pocket (short sleeve).

I think you're going to be more lucky with cycling tees:-)

Re: Running tops with POCKETS??? a rarity? really?

One of my pet peeves - well about running shorts, anyway.  Where are the GD pockets????

I have one pair of running shorts I bought years ago (can't even remember where I got them) and they have zippered pockets on the side and a little velcroed pocket below the waistband in the back which I guess is for an MP3.  I can carry keys, phone, "girlie products", GUs or whatever else, all zipped up in there and not falling out.  Only problem with the shorts is that they are too big for me and kind of baggy (also getting kind of worn) but on days when I really want pockets on my run, out they come.

How sad is it that I can't find another pair of shorts like that.  Some running shorts, not all, have the tiny key pocket in the waistband, but for heaven's sakes why can't they make it big enough for a phone?  Why can't the manufacturers GIVE US SOME POCKETS ALREADY!!!!!

Re: Running tops with POCKETS??? a rarity? really?

I'm willing to bet that most women's running clothes don't have decent pockets for the same reason that most of our street clothes don't have decent pockets. In a word: FASHION. Pockets, especially if they're functional and one actually puts stuff in them, typically make one look just a bit heavier. Manufacturers and retailers would much rather sell clothes that make us women look sleek. Unfortunately, function is usually way down on their list of priorities.
