Sweet. This is a good excuse to head to the coast for the weekend and run up and down the giant dune at Pacific City. Right after swimming in the ocean.

Re: Can I Officially Freak Out Now?!?

No point in being ill or freaking out -

Dont wory about it - you dont have to be able to outswim the shark - just to be able to outswim at least 1 other competitor

You will do great Hobey

You are going to do so awesome. Sharks are like bears... all ya gotta do is swim faster than the person next to you. :D

Re: Can I Officially Freak Out Now?!?

I agree with Neil. Fear not about what you cannot control, and especially fear not about the shark; if you embrace your fears, you will realize in a very uncontroled way that you actually can control them, and you will see clearly that the shark is their to help, where all you have to do is embrace the shark's fin to pull you through the course. Before you know you will be on the bike, and after that you will hit that most awesome runner's high en route to a world class hobey performance.

It's December... you'll be fine!

I imagine that's what many of the first time HIMers & IMers feel when they hit the "SUBMIT" button.

I hear ya, and you are very right. As I always say, fear of that kind is good. Fear is the single most important thing that will motivate you to push your body farther than it could have otherwise done. And wait until the day comes when you click "Submit" for your very first Ironman. Talk about nerves. Holy carp. When I registered for IMWI '06, I did Community Fund... and they require you to mail, as in snail mail, your application. The guy at the post office, seeing who it was addressed to, asked about the letter and if I were a Pro. That set me off. My heart was jackhammering. Before my nerves allowed me to squeak out an answer, he bombarded me with more questions: do you have to qualify for an Ironman? Can anybody do one? How long is the swim? Is it hard? Can you really swim that far with all those people? What do you do if you get hit? Or if you have to stop? Or if you lose your goggles?

Holy freak-out show.

Oh my gosh that sounds like so much fun. How long is the swim exactly? Sorry if that has been said somewhere in the post. What a ride that will be!!

That water is gonna be COLD

Due youeself a favor and make sure you get as much time in that water as you can prior to the race. You will not be ottering (Where is Jen Otter anyway?) in htat water. You will be plenty motivated to get your arse out of that water as quick as possible.

Congrats

Besides, you don't need to worry about sharks. Sea Lions eat sharks. ]:)

Just watch out for this guy and don't hang from a helicopter under the bridge.
