I did this last week but turned around and went home when I realized I forgot my cell phone.

    That is so cute!

That was my dad's FAVORITE line. I totally resented it every time he said it, even as a little kid.

I could have accepted if he said something like "this isn't a place that you can make noise" but that phrase always made it sound like children were supposed to be just for show. And I most emphatically was NOT just for show.

Honestly, while I do believe that sometimes things just have to go in the direction of "Because I'm the mom and I said so" I think it's not a good thing to make a child feel like their input isn't valuable at all. BTW I don't think CLB was really endorsing that line of thinking, but even just reading it gives me a cranky feeling!

It's normal for teenage children too, or so I've heard.

    Re: Speaking of parenting challenges...

My DD (now 14) used to tell me I was a mean mom.  I'd just laugh and tell her she had NO IDEA how lucky she is, and how mean a real mean mom can be.  Of course, this was probably when she was older than 4 - I wouldn't want to scare a small child with thoughts of what mean moms do.  But as she got older, she definitely understood what I'm saying.

I am sorry I brought back that sense of being disrespected and devalued with my joke. That's the problem with humor: what I find funny is often things that are so wrong as to be outrageous.

    Well not all things.

Understatement and dry humor get lost in print a lot of time.

Hope you find comfort in the other posters who are less demented than me, Bonita.

I am very sad to hear that because I love you very much and will miss you a lot...

You make the child feel sad about applying it's independence and thus you are breaking it's free will. How in the hell can a child deal with this?

Or as the old saying goes, Parents are the bones on which children cut their teeth.

I think this is what people mean when they say that four is hardest of all.
