Race Report for the Llano Not So Fun Race!

Got up at 6:30 and rousted my daughter and her boy friend at 6:45 so we could head up to Llano for their second annual Not so Fun Race.  We drove up from Kerrville and got there about 8:45 and picked up our race packets.  It was chilly and windy, but the sky was blue and the sun was out, so it was bearable.  Soon we were called to the starting line and the horn sounded and we began our 1 mile adventure.
We had all signed up for the 1 mile race (run/walk were combined for all events),  there was also a 5K and a 10K.  We signed up for the mile for a couple reasons, my wife was going to try her first race and she hadn't had much time to train, also somewhere we read that they call it the Not So Fun Run, because of all the hills make it "not so fun", so the "kids" decided to just run the shorter distance too.  Since she couldn't make due to health reasons, I decided to try to run the race!

I started near the back of the pack, and soon lost sight of the "kids" as we left Badu Park and headed up the first hill.  I jogged for the first 7:40 and then walked for about a 90 seconds and then ran the rest of the way.  My time was 11:49.  Imagine my surprise when my kids met me at the finish line told me I finished 3rd, "right behind" them  (ok 2 + minutes behind them).  But it was awesome that we finished 1-2-3  (out of 14 participants) and we each took first place in our age divisions.  Yea Team "Michigan"
After we finished we walked back to the car and the kids put on long pants over their running shorts and we decided to finish walking the 5K.  We did just that and I stopped and took several pictures(see below)  and we finished the 5K around 58:04
We finished and waited for the 10K'ers to finish and the rewards to be handed out.  We all proudly accepted our medals, posed for the group picture and then headed home to look for some Texas Bar B Q!
In summary we found the small, informal "Not So Fun Run" to very much be a lot of fun!

Hello to 50+ - I feel part of a special crowd. Today was the San Diego Coronado Valentine 10k.

I did real well.  I am on a roll.

The day was cool, the start low 50s I think.  Lots of early morning sun.

I have done several races in the last two (2) years and none of them had any staging for different paces, 6 minute milers, 7, 8, 9 etc.  Is this a thing of the past?

There was shuffling and passsing but manageable.

What a scene at Tidelands Park and we went under the Coronado Bridge, Glorietta Bay and back.

Alas, there were no volunteers calling the time at the mile markers.

I suppose I could start volunteering to be a part of the solution or carry a stopwatch.

It's february now, I am registered for the June San Diego Rock'n'roll half marathon so it is time to get some 7 to 13 mile training in!

Local running clubs are on the idea list!

    CONGRATS!!

10k is a real challenge and happy for you that you did well!

Some races are better planned than others ......

But the scenery seems to have been worth it.

Hey, I will be running the marathon in the RnR in San Diego .......

Never ran the course there but I'm excited about it!

Running clubs can be great motivators .......... just don't get too discouraged, stay with 'your crowd' for support.

    Good Luck!

    Susan,

I'm running the full MARATHON (my second one this year) in the San Diego RnR in June; hoping to finish under 4 hrs!

Planning on running at least 3 marathons this year ......... maybe a fourth one, a trail one ....

In the meantime, I am running 1/2 marathons each month, trail courses preferably; am an avid trail runner.

    I love it!

slipstick is running the 1/2 marathon in the San Diego RnR.

It's fun to 'know' others on the forum are at some events ....... making it possible to meet them ....... and cheer each other on!

Di, You are a busy runner!  The $ involved in signing up for that many races is impressive, too.  You are investing in your running in many ways.  Trail runs are my favorite, as well.

    Run well!

Re: 50 and over, 5k and beyond - Race Reports

Race Report – Mercedes Half Marathon - Birmingham AL 2/13/11

This was the first “away” race that I was in (run or tri) where I was able to participate with people I know. Not only did two people from my Tri Club come (one was my roommate) but I was able to meet up w “Mimi” from our “50 & older” thread, who drove in with her husband from Mississippi. Though none of us ran at the same pace, it was nice to have friends there.  It couldn’t have been a better day for a race – 31 deg rising to high of >60, clear & light breeze.  I ran in tights & short sleeve tech shirt.  I brought my pink lite jacket, but tied it to my waist before the starting gun & I was fine.

This was my 3rd HM, & I had finished the other 2 with calf cramps that started at mile 10.  I don’t know if it was from poor hydration, electrolytes, or under-training, but I was determined to avoid it this time.  In days leading to the race, I had more salted food, bananas & carbs.  After the HM in Nov, my training had lapsed to minimum, & I indulged so much in holiday stuff that I gained back about 6 lbs. When I did a 4 mi race on Jan 1, I felt bloated & sluggish. So I restarted my training to lose weight, re-build to distance, get some speed back & do more “hill” training. I got back to my summer wt, built up to 12 mi, and had a strong 8 mi “hill” run last weekend, then tapered.

A month ago, when in town, I used the race map to drive the hilly part of the race.  But I must have made a few wrong turns (it was hard to read the map) because the route I drove had more, steeper hills, than the race route. (Psych! LOL!).  It turns out that the steepest hills were in mi 4-6 (not later) & since I “ran” those, most of the rest was easier than expected, though there were several long upgrades.  For race day, I used the elevation map to estimate what my run splits might be for me to reach 13 mi in 3 hrs, then wrote my elapsed time for every 2 mi on my forearm.  This helped me to stay on pace and ended up being a very good predictor of what I actually did.

Race morning, I had 2 bags of instant oatmeal w almonds & raisins & 20 oz of coffee.  I brought pre-race water, but didn’t drink much.  For fluids, I brought 2 24oz bottles of diluted Gatorade (fanny pack & in-hand), because I went through at least that much during my 12 mile training run.  But during the race, I wasn’t that thirsty – I drank when I needed to, but felt pretty full. I only took water twice. I didn’t finish the 1st bottle until mile 9.5.  By mile 11, I emptied about 4 oz from bottle # 2 because it was heavy & unneeded, but I still had 12 oz left by the finish.  I got 1 “Gu” at mile 4, and nursed that until mile 7.

I had one technical glitch at the race start.  Because I was looking at real time, so that I knew when to start my iPod, it was still on real time when I crossed the starting line & I never started my race timer!  By the time I got to the half mile mark, I had realized it, and started the timer at ½ mi.  This mistake gave me a chance for a lot of mental exercise, when I had to figure out my target time for each mile.

The other problem was that my GPS distance seemed to be further along than the mileage clocks, so that by the mile 10 timer, my GPS was reading 9.90 miles.  So I figured the race would end by GPS distance of 13.0 miles- and I targeted my last few miles that way.  But in the end, GPS read 13.11 miles !!???

I felt great the entire race, and feel that my training (especially hills, and step intervals on the TM) had prepared me well. I thought of you, my on-line friends, often while I ran.  I only walked after mile 8, on up hills, and only for 30 sec or less. On down hills I picked up the pace with shorter, quicker steps.  My best pace songs came on during mile 12 and helped to push me to the finish, where I sprinted the last 50 m.  Final time: 3:02:02, or a 13:54 pace – one min/mile faster than November’s race. Though 3 hrs was my hope, my target was under 14 mm pace.  I beat my January 4 mi race time by over 2 min, and set a 10K PR.

I rested well afterwards, and today, though I don’t feel sore, I’m taking a day off. I hope you all have as great an experience as I did on your next race, whatever the distance. Sorry to post so long.

Re: 50 and over, 5k and beyond - Race Reports

Race Report – Mercedes Benz HM 2-13-11.

I got up at 4:15 a.m. in order to have time for breakfast and to let mother nature have all the time she needed before race time! I had a banana and ½ bagel for breakfast with a cup of decaf coffee. I had made an effort the week leading up to the run to be well hydrated and well nourished. All week I had eat bananas and drank a lot of water and I ate more carbs than usual for me. My husband and I at the “Carbs for Cause” fundraiser for the Bell Center on Saturday night and had Chicken Alfredo and a ceasar’s salad which was nice. We sat at the table with a couple from Flagstaff, AZ. Trent is a professional marathoner. He was very interesting to talk to and I ask him what time he was expecting to run the marathon in and he said 2:20 or so! I told him to wave at me as he lapped me going into the finish line! He came in 2nd place overall with a time of 2:19:23 and a 5.21 mm average pace! Can you imagine!

    Anyway, back to my report!

I met up with JoAnn and her friend from her Tri club in the hotel lobby about 6:10 a.m. and we walked the couple blocks over to the starting line.

I always run with music! I have ever since I started running. My husband insisted that I use his new ipod nano that he got for Christmas. Sooo….to make a long story short, I was trying to get my music together and the ipod would not work. I had JoAnn and her friend look at it and the darned battery was deader than a doornail! So you guessed it! I got to run the entire 13.1 miles with NO music! It was not as bad as I thought it would be.

JoAnn and I did not run the race together. We lined up together in the 12 mm corral and was inching our way out when JoAnn made a move to the side and off she went! She had her own times that she wanted to meet and I had mine so, we parted ways, but spent some time together after the run! I was at the finish line to cheer for her when she finished and I am so proud of her!!! Go JOANN!!!!

I had a great run! This course had a lot more hills than I have ever run. I live in a very flat area of Mississippi and we just do not have the hills to run so these seemed huge to me unlike JoAnn who lives in a hillier area, but even not being used to the hills I was able to set a new PR by decreasing my time by 8min 30 sec from my first HM 5 weeks ago and it was on a flat course!! My watch time was 2:40:23 with an average of 12:12 mm! I do not have my chip time yet. They are supposed to email it, but I have not got the email yet. I finished 27th out of 58 in my age group! JoAnn finished well also!

My husband was at the finish line and was going to take pictures when I came across. When I crossed the finish line, he was yelling…you got here earlier than I thought! He was trying to get the camera out of his pocket, but got his cell phone instead! It was really funny! He said that he did not expect me for at least another 10 to 15 mins so he did not have the camera ready! He felt so bad.

I am a little sore today, but nothing bad. I probably will not run again until around Wednesday when I start my training for my 10K the end of March.

The event was fun, challenging and we received a impressive medal, a finisher’s hat and a neat tech tee shirt along with some other goodies!

I am very proud of myself for setting a PR on a challenging course! I may become a runner someday after all!

Just for fun…here are my splits per mile of the run!

    Mile 1   11:19 mm

    Mile 2   11:52 mm

    Mile 3  11:51 mm

    Mile 4   11:51 mm

Mile 5   12:25 mm (must have been a big hill)

    Mile 6   11:55 mm

    Mile 7   12:19 mm

    Mile 8   12:43 mm

    Mile 9    11:48 mm

    Mile 10  12:38 mm

    Mile 11  12:33 mm

    Mile 12  12:43 mm

    Mile 13  12:54 mm

    Last .0134  10:54 mm

I had told JoAnn that I was going to do a run/walk. I ended up just slowing down and walking through the 1 aid station that I took water at and the 2 aid stations where I took water and GU’s.

JoAnn & Mimi - those were very interesting and exciting race reports!  Thanks for taking the time to add some great details.  I'm feeling really pumped to get my training in high gear after reading those, not to mention that our weather is going to be really splendid this week!  However, I think I may have over done a little bit last week as my nerve endings have been throbbing all weekend on the "shingles side."  Bummer.  I'm so terrified of having another painful outbreak that I'm taking a few easy days instead.  Oh, well, an easy, slow walk is better than nothing at all, so I'll just do that until the pain is gone.

You guys really just inspire me - you're awesome!

Kathy- Like mine, your watch time was the same as chip time 2:40:23. Sorry to sprint ahead at the start line, (I've learned to sneak to the edge of the pack), but I know you passed me quickly in the first mile. Running by myself all of the time, I have just not learned to "play" with others yet. Here is the page with results: http://www.besttimescct.com/results/Mercedes11_Half_Overall.txt.

Of course, I knew you would be faster than me, cause your 5K times are much better than mine.  I am so happy that you were able to beat your "old" HM time by so much!  It was a pleasure to meet you and your husband.  Who knows, maybe I'll do St. Jude too.

Here are my splits - turns out my split for the 10K was exactly 13.0mm, and 14:42mm ave after that.

    1 mi -12:40     2 mi -12:53     3 mi - 13.0     4 mi - 13:24     5 mi -14.0 (up)    6 mi - 13:37     7 mi - 14:07     8 mi - 14:54 (up)     9 mi - 13:57 (dwn)     10 mi - 15:07 (up)     11 mi -14:29     12 mi - 14:40     13 mi - 14:06     0.1 mi - 1:08 (10:05mm)

"They" say to go easier during the early miles, then faster later in the race.  But there is so much energy at the start, and the well-rested legs are just raring to go, that I just don't want to waste that feeling, especially when it feels like nothing to run.  Maybe later, when I've more experience, will I be able to do that.  It was a great day to run, and I am just so blessed to have the capability to do so.

Those are good looking splits JoAnn! I had already looked at the times and you are right, they are the same as my watch time which is confusing as like you, my watch was behind the mile markers. Ex. when we would come up to the 10 mile marker, my watch would show that I was at like 9.83 or something like that. When I finished I had a distance of 13.14 miles instead of 13.1

Did you get an email with your official time? I did not, but we were supposed to.
