If last weekend counts as the start of the holiday season (Dec 4), I did the South Pasadena Tiger Run last Saturday. They have both a 5K and 10K that start together. I prefer their 5K because it's flat and fast, and opted for the 5K this year. Finished in 24:27 and was delighted to have broken 25 min on three consecutive 5K's (Nov 14, Nov 25, Dec 4)...a very nice way to finish the year.

    2014 highlights...

Friends of the Villa Park Library 5K, Villa Park, CA, 24:10

I signed up for my first 5K...on New Years Eve at midnight.  This race is at a park that is decorated with Christmas lights.  So you get to run through the lights and they shoot off fireworks.  What better way to start off the new year!!

Running the "Polar Dash 5k" with my kids on New Years Day.  It should be pretty cold up here in Minnesota, but still very fun!

    Happy Holidays!

Re: Christmas or Holiday Races ?

Here in Tulsa, there's also a Race into the New Year that I might run. It's a run through the lights, then they shoot also off fireworks at midnight.  My nephew has run it a few times and says it is the one of the most enjoyable runs all year long.

I did sign up for the Polar Bear Plunge which is a 2 mile run with 3 swimming pool plunges, the last of which has your finisher's medal at the bottom.

Frosty's Run in north Phoenix on Sunday.  I don't know whether this involves chasing an ersatz snowman!

Re: Christmas or Holiday Races ?

My running club started a Grand Prix series in October whereby we run a race each month for a year. We get points and all the races are age graded (helps when your 50). The biggest plus for me though is that it is forcing me to race in the COLD months (Massachusetts). I have consequently run a Gobbler race on Thanksgiving (26 degrees), a Jingle Bell run on Dec 4 (which remarkably I set a PR in 21:33)  28 degrees, and I am doing a New Years Day race. I had always stopped racing in early fall because I was a wimp about the cold and retreated to a treadmill for the winter. Now I am outside running six days a week to keep getting a respectible finish in these races. Its good to have a little incentive to give you a little push.

Re: Christmas or Holiday Races ?

my wife and I are doing a race New Years ' Eve- 4:00 Pm ,actually.

this will be my wifes VERY FIRST race and I couldn't be prouder of her.

she saw me limp through my first Half marathon back in oct.-and that didn't interest her- but she happened to see a new aquaintance she had just met a few weeks previosly running in the attached 10K-and decided if her new friend could run that SHE could start running also.

so I hooked her up with the C25K plan-she made it all the way through-and next friday will be her  first race-she is SO very pleased with herself.

she is actually out running right now in the snow!

Re: Christmas or Holiday Races ?

Congratulations.  I ran my first 5K last New Year's Day, with a completion time of 31.06, and a monster was created.  Since then, it has been a steady diet of holiday or charity runs, including the obligatory "Turkey Trot" 10K (1.04 over a snowy/icy course) and a "Jingle Bell" run through the Seattle rain.  I'm going to finish the year with a New Year's Eve morning 1/2 marathon.  Enjoy the insanity.
