I would rather run with earbuds. It is important to buy a pair that includes different sizes of rubber earpieces so they they fit snugly in the canal.
I tape the cord to the inside of my running cap and leave as little as possible cord dangling outside by my ears (the cord goes up the back of my neck and then under the hat. This has several advantages. Besides minimizing the amount of cord you have to deal with, it helps keep the buds in your ears. If one does manage to fall out, it is a simple matter to put it back in since it will be dangling right by the ear. It also helps cut down on the noise you can sometimes experience as the loose cord bangs around on your body.
If you do not wear a cap when running but wear a headband, you can accomplish the same thing by taping the cord to the inside of your headband.
"What distinguishes those of us at the starting line from those of us on the couch is that we learn through running to take what the days gives us, what our body will allow us, and what our will can tolerate." - John Bingham
