Re: My last run was...how was yours?

@thintally - thanks for the encouragement! I have a hard time imagining running 13.1 miles myself. I took it easy for the past few days, with an easy 3-mile run Tuesday and some walking the other days. I was a little worried about my run today, afraid of injury, but it went well. 5 miles, with half of the distance at tempo pace. According to the Runner's World pace calculator that's supposed to be 10:10mm based on my recent 5K time.

The weather was perfect this morning, cool and breezy, and after a slow warm-up mile I got to this road on my route that's exactly 1 mile long. It's one of those streets that looks flat but it isn't quite, and I was running it in the "downhill" direction, hence the 9:13 pace! My 2nd tempo mile wasn't downhill and had several turns, so that one I did right at 10:10. Last half-mile at tempo I needed to say to myself, "you can do this," and I could! In between the tempo sections I jogged slowly. Great run overall.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

4.5 miles last night. 2 miles tonight and 11 miles tommorrow morning. Felt like I had a bad run last night, then I remembered that less than a year ago I couldn't even run around the small park (2/3 mile) by our house. Now i'm doing 10:00 min miles and getting ready to run a half lol. How soon we forget sometimes. Good luck to all who have races this weekend!!!

Yay Debm2011!  Great job on improving your distance!

Wednesday - 3 miles recovery with the dog @4:45 am.  Too early! *yawn*

Yesterday - 1 hr. of racquetball, then 4 x 1-mile repeats at almost 5K pace.

This morning - ran to the ATM with the dog.  2.75 miles round-trip, a nice recovery distance.

Hopefully my new trail shoes come in today.  Brooks Cascadia 6's, the super-green colored ones!

    Happy running, everyone.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Ran 11.91 miles this morning to beat the heat, humidity, and Irene. The run went well! Actually overcame the sluggishness that I normally experience around mile 10.

Looking forward to next week's long run, and hopefully my first half (technically) on Sept 10th! I'm treating that as a training run though. My first "OFFICIAL" half in my eyes is the Baltimore Half (with the fancy expo and all that).

Happy Running! Be safe out there guys!

Mulvasa...I know where Stephenville is. Sorry your sciatic nerve is still bothering you.

I did two runs this week.  One on Wednesday and the other on Friday. School has started this week for us so that made getting my runs in difficult.  I did 3 one mile intervals on both days to work on my time.  My sister runs a 10.5 - 11 minute mile pace for a 5K and I want to keep up with her when we get to race together.  My first mile this morning was 9:56!!  First time in my life I have ever ran a mile in under ten minutes!  My other two runs today were 10:50 and 10:39. I walked about a quarter mile inbetween them.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

So I "lied" about a run along the river....Woke up yesterday morning by thunder shaking my house!!!!!  Got the girls off to school and headed back home and waited for the storm to pass so I could run...not that I mind running in the rain but severe thunder and lightening--no thank you.  I could have headed to the gym for a TM run but I was hoping it would pass quick enough to get me out the door...next thing I know I'm wrapped up in shampooing carpets and washing curtains (i get bored when I'm home alone!!!  DH is just happy the furniture wasn't moved) and its too close to school ending to get running so yesterday was a wash.  This morning I threw my gym bag in the car planning to run after work and kept trying to talk myself into waiting until this evening when it cools off...but chances were I'd skip since its friday night and we have errands to run then its social hour with the neighbors where we all catch up on the week and have a glass of wine/ beer...not gonna run then!!!!  So I forced myself to agree to a run at the gym and when I was done with my last patient shortly after lunch I headed to the gym....but on the drive there I told myself I hadn't eaten anything so eat now run later and started to head home....my guilt got to me and pulled me into the nearby park and I got 3.5mi (OF HUGE HILLS) in before it was time to get the girls. So despite my inner couch potato fighting me I got a nice run in.  I had not run these hills since december and remember why I talk myself out of this park all the time but LOVE every time I run it

@thintally: awesome job at overcoming all the 'thoughts' that keep so many people from remaining consistent. good run and what a challenge! i get asked all the time "how do you stay motivated? how do you do it?" and your story tells the tale. it's just a matter of 'doing it' instead of making excuses. it's really that simple.

Ran 13.38 miles this morning whoot whoot !!! This was my first ever 13 mile run, quite a feat for an old guy (as they call me at work). I now have a better idea when my brain kicks in and takes over for my body. Its good to know that I'll be able to enter a half next spring and have a good base by then. When I first started this journey never would have thought 13 miles was in my future. Have a great weekend everyone, I already did lol....

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

@Dobrobuck - yes, we need to remember where we used to be. I felt really sluggish on my 4-mile run this morning, but remembering that even that slow pace was faster than the best effort mile I managed at the beginning of a training program at the Y in 2009 put things in perspective. Back then even a mile wiped me out. Good job on running 13 miles!

@Running Queen - congrats on breaking the 10 min mile! I know I felt really good when I did that, especially since in college (20+ years ago) I couldn't complete the 5 laps in 12.5 min required for graduation and had to walk 3 miles instead.

To all you East Coast runners: hope you and your homes survive the weekend without damage.

As an East Coast Runner, I'm only just sorry I'm too sore and in recovery mode which is preventing me from running today.  I'm sure anyone who was here and was in a position to run will be just fine.  What a media hysteria circus!  My new favorite song beginning today is green day american idiot.  One nation controlled by the media.  Only to say I'm glad  to be associated with runners, a class of people who stare adversity in the face and keep on trucking.  This nation, this world, is pathetic.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

I got to run this morning before the hurricane rolled in.  8 or 9 miles on a nice paved trail along the Schuylkill River, cloudy, humid and not much breeze.  Everybody, bikers, runners, and walkers seemed to be in a very good mood.  Glad to be out before it all hits the fan, I guess.  I was barely into my run when this nice lady pushing a stroller catches me up from behind.  I picked up my pace to about 8:45's and ran til she finished about 2.5 miles from where I picked up with her.  Oye!  She was fast!  Without the stroller she said she'd be running mid to low 7's. I finished my run greatly relieved that she was not running farther with me.

Good luck to my NJ and southward shore point runner friends.  No hype there - there's some heavy weather rolling through.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

I got all hung up yesterday preparing for the hurricane, that I had no time to run. I woke up this morning determined to squeeze in a run before the world gets crazy. I hate running in the humidity, but I thought I'll do what I can. I squeezed in between 6-7 miles and raced the clouds back home to avoid getting soaked in the rain. I was hoping to do an 7-8 miles run this weekend, but Irene and the humiditiy were in the way. I hope I make it to the 10 mile run before my half. I am getting nervous!!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

6.31 miles on Saturday and today, my longest run ever at 12.17 miles, done in 1:52:58. I feel so good!!! I wanted to go for 10 since I've been eager to get into the double digits. I took a GU at mile 8, even though I felt like I could've waited longer, and once I got to 10, I was like, "I can go longer". I'm really trying to pace myself. My first half is on 10/2 and I don't care about time. My main goal is run without stopping, other than to grab water or a needed potty break. I've been running with my running club and pacing myself with the faster runners, averaging a little over 8 mins a mile, so I've been running faster than usual on all of my runs, even the "easy" ones. I didn't want to do that today, so I slowed down and allowed them to run on. I found a comfortable but decent pace for myself. The course is hilly, but I felt so strong today. My mind and body were in synch, which was awesome. I didn't need any trickery today. I guess the weather and my playlist were in synch too because everything about today's run, even the massive hills, felt aweseome. So good, in fact, that I got really emotional at the end. My running club, who all ran shorter distances, was standing around cheering for me. I teared up and just screamed at the end. It felt so good. I'm still on that runner's high and I hope to never forget how good this feels. I'm so ready for 13.1. Bring it on!

Great job to everyone who hit the pavement this weekend. You all keep me inspired.
