Re: My last run was...how was yours?

So I was bummed when I discovered that the 1/2 last week and the one this weekend are not an option, BUT>>>> last night secured myself a bib for the Pittsburgh 1/2 and I'm super excited now!!!!  I've lived here for 81/2 yrs and have been wanting to do it since BEFORE I started running, but the date was always the first weekend of May which never worked for me, but this year due to a convention scheduled since 2007, the date was changed for THIS YEAR ONLY!!!!

Any way got 6.5 mi in (9:12mm) after work today, getting dinner in the oven now while the kiddos enjoy the brief sunshine before the rain starts back up and then its off to 90min yoga in about an hour.  Off work tomorrow, not sure waht the day has in store but hoping for a run through the park if DD1 has soccer practice.  What is everyone else up to?

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Hello Everyone .

It's been a while since I've posted, not since I've run.  I've had some good runs and one that nearly killed me, at least that's how it felt .

I'll start by explaining that the man I work for is a 33 year old fitness fanatic. He works out two hours a day, six days a week. He also teaches Boot Camp and Cross Fit classes.

I've worked out with him before so I know to expect pain but this time the workout he invited me to involved running so I was optimistic. Here's a link to what the workout is supposed to be. http://www.sealfit.com/blog.php?id=27368

I wasn't able to do the reps but here's a rundown.

    Run 1.75 mi / 50 pull ups -  Run 1.5 mi / 75 push ups -  Run 1.25 mi / 100 squats -  Run 1 mi / 50 sit ups -  Run 1 mi

I showed up 3 minutes late so I missed the 100 burpees before the run. All of the running was at about an 8 min pace and rolling hills.  I was sore for days.

Tuesday I did a 5k training run at race pace, and today I did a 5k trail run at an easy recovery pace. Tomorrow I swim and then rest Friday. Saturday is my first Triathlon of the season. I'm excited and nervous . I get that way before every race . I hope that never goes away.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    ...too little, too late, maybe.

I ran a good 7+ miles this afternoon, going out barefoot and coming back in my Vibrams.  The trouble is that I've had schedule conflicts and weather delays day after day for the last 2 weeks and just not gotten in the miles I wanted to get myself ready for my HM on the 1st of May.  So, I know I can run 10 miles without much strain, but those last 3 might not be too much fun.  What he hell, though, I will set a PR no matter when I finish - it's my first HM!  Any wisdom from the support crew?

Lucy, I think your time is safe at this point.  I don't think I'll be catching up with you.

SansPants: Congrats on your 11 mile run. It's a great milestone. Most adults couldn't run even 1 mile. I ran my first ever ten miler last weekend. I haven't needed food on my runs, but I bought a Camelbak so I'd have water on the long runs, especially with summer coming to Southern California. I found it was pretty comfortable on my back. I'll be experimenting with various energy sources to avoid the dreaded Wall. At age 63, I'm building my miles very slowly to avoid injury.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Hey everyone. I'm a new runner and signed up for the first organized event, the Disney half marathon in Sept. I'm currently up to 5 miles on my long runs and avg between 3-5 miles 4-5X a week. Right now I'm training myself, so any input would be greatly appriciated. My focus is really just to finish the race without getting picked up for being too slow right now I'm running around a 12mm at 5miles (it's hard to really tell since I have to stop for the dog periodically.) Any words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. As for today's run...it felt great. I'm starting to enjoy running rather than it being something I have to "will" myself to do. Discussion boards like this help to keep the fire glowing. Thanks!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

I'm still a fairly new runner and this week was the best so far:

I ran the Boston 5k with 5000 others last Sunday the day before the Marathon and had a great experience.

Last night I ran my best unofficial PR at 27:31 at a weekly 5k run a local club puts on at Devens, MA.

Doing better than I expected for a 60yo.

Oh yeah - Scored one of the new Nike+ GPS watches at the Boston Marathon Fitness Expo.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

I'm sorry to say today's run: not so good...only 2.75 miles with a nagging pain in my lower right calf that I can't quite get rid of. I tend to underpronate and can't seem to find the right combination to correct it. Hopefully tomorrow's run will better.

BTW, congrats Guy on your time for your weekly run. It really feels good to hit a personal best. Kudos to you.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Yesterday I was feeling as if I was coming down with something; head hurt, it was  a day from hades and I went home, took a bath, relaxed and had a good dinner---I was suppose to ride an hour on the bike though.

I mapped out my 6 mile run for this morning and then about 1/2 hour before the alarm was to go off I rolled over, wide awake, and changed the alarm to later.  I decided that I needed to get more sleep and rest my body--so I didn't do my 6 miles today either.  Feeling bad about taht, but I feel soooo much BETTER than yesterday so I think it was well worth it.

though I'm still regretting the run not taken.

    Hey Rick,

Thank you!  How was your 10 mile run?  I'd love to get a 10m race under my belt and try one of those Camelbaks sometime.  I just don't know how I feel running with a backpack on...  I'm just trying to get use to the Ampiphod hydration belt for now.  Best of luck avoiding that wall and injuries!  See you on the boards!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    HoundMom:

Excited to hear from you! I'm signed up for the Disney Half too! My only running experience so far is the Santa Clarita 5k last November. I was new to running and got so many injuries trying to train for the 5K that I finally had to quit running for about 6 weeks to heal, and then had only a few weeks to practice before the race. On race day, I decided to just go easy and have fun, and I did much much better than I'd expected, coming in 3rd in my age group.

My advice to you is: take it easy, build distance slowly. 4-5 times a week is a lot of running. I'm only running twice a week, one short and one long (but am thinking of maybe adding another occasional short run). You have about 19 weeks. I'd continue easy runs building distance slowly without worrying about speed for 7 weeks. In the next 6 weeks, while still increasing the distance of the long runs, start doing intervals and hills on the short runs, alternating bursts of speed with recovery jogs or walks. The last 6 weeks consider tapering back, especially the last 3 weeks. By then, your long runs will be topping out at 14 miles, and your shorter runs can be more relaxing.

My biggest worry is overtraining injuries. I don't heal fast, so I'm careful not to push too hard. Last week was my first 10 miler, and I also just started hill work which I will alternate with intervals. The key is to enjoy it. You are capable of much more than you can imagine, but you've got to grow into it.

I would also recommend the RunKeeper app if you have a smartphone. It's a great way to track your runs.

Good luck on your training - I'll look forward to seeing your progress in future posts!

    Rick

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

My last run was great!  I did 2 miles yesterday, and I only wanted to stretch my legs to recover from my first 5 mile run in quite a long time that I did the day before.  I didn't want to push it, as I had a baseball practice today that I wanted to keep my legs as fresh as I could for, but I still wanted to go a bit faster than some of my recent runs.  That made a goal of 18 min, or a 9 min mile pace, and I came in at 18:10.  The legs were appropriately sore from the 5 mile run, but to get right back out there the next day felt good.  My tendency would be to take a few days off with the excuse that I did such a long run, I need to recover before running again.

At my age, 40, and playing baseball for the first time in 15 years, I'm finding that the practices can be a workout in themselves, so that's what I did today, and sure enough, my legs felt weak as I was attempting to chase down fly balls.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Hey Rick: Thanks for sharing all the great advice. Just curious to see what is an appropriate distance to add each week. Right now I'm adding about a mile per week to my long runs. Does that sound right or should it be a mile every two weeks? On a slightly different note, great to hear you did so well with your first race and kudos on the 10 mile run. I would imagine it feels good to get both the first race and 10 mile run under your belt. I was actually thinking about picking up a shorter race like a 5K or 10k before Sept, but we'll see. Good luck with your training as well. I look forward to hearing about your progress as well.

My last run was painful.  I did a 15k race billed as "the South's toughest 15k", even my arms were sore the next day.  I improved my time by over 2 minutes from last year, so that was a plus.  Last year, my race immediately after this particular 15k was a 5k, which is still my personal best 5k, so hopefully history will repeat itself.
