Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Hi Guys!

I'm not currently training for anything, but trying to keep in shape, and keep up the running routine through winter, so it will be an easy transition into my spring and summer racing events :-)

Its been a cold few weeks in Colorado, and today, the sun was shining, the snow was melting, the birds were chirping.  I couldn't wait to get home from work and lace up my new running shoes (just got the Mizuno Inspires and I LOVE them!) and hit my old neighborhood running trail.  Its been a while since I've run outdoors because the weather has confined to the gym the past few weeks, but it felt GREAT!  With the sun on my face, and a nice crisp breeze, I easily pounded out 7 miles without even checking my Nike plus distance monitor.  It felt good to be back on the old trail, enjoying the nice weather, and my run felt almost effortless.  So nice!!!!  I can't wait for Spring to roll around, so I can do this EVERYDAY!!!!  Until then, I will bide my time on the treadmill at Bally's :-)

Believe you can do it. Think no other way but “Yes you can.”
The human body is capable of considerably more physical endurance than most of us realize!!

Good to find you again, Lucy. Ran 5 yesterday. Doing 7 on Friday. That's certainly easier than the 10 last Friday. Next Friday is 12! I must be nuts. I will be glad when the May 1 marathon is over. I plan to take a couple weeks off from training and give my body a chance to heal.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Thank you! Yes! You're right! The cold can really put a damper on your mood.

Well since the last time I posted in this thread, the weather has warmed up considerably and the snow is almost gone.  The streets and sidewalks are clear enough and safe enough to run on and I took to the pavement last night. All I can say is WOW! What a difference a break makes! I told myself I would only run a short 3k or so because the sun was going down soon.  I didn't wear my reflective vest, just some running gear with reflective strips, and I didn't carry my cell phone so I didn't want to go too far. But, I literally started running in circles! I made it to my finish point and just took off running again... I couldn't stop! In the end, I ran about 5k. I didn't really have a goal yesterday, I just felt the need to burn off some energy.

I think I'm ready to get back into training mode now. I really needed that mental and physical break. It makes a HUGE difference.

This is something I truly believe in. When I started running, I thought to myself "well I'm under 30! My parents were athletic. I should be able to run as fast as I want to." Wrong. I run as fast as I can... not necessarily as fast as the next person. I had to stop killing myself to force my body to do something that it simply can not. I'm happy with my goal of reaching a sub 30min 5k and just finishing a half-marathon.

I also accept it when I have bad days. It happens to everybody regardless of skill or endurance level. Once a person learns these things about their self, they can move on to enjoying the sport. Enjoy it for what it is. It's all up to you.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

I did a quick 4mi run yesterday and wound up getting pelted by hail for about 10 minutes. Hail hurts when it falls from many thousands of feet but I can't say that I'm sorry I went out. Today, though it was raining and below 50 degrees F, I talked myself into doing some speed work on the track of a local community college. I have no rain gear so I went out in a short sleeved tech shirt, an old baseball cap and some gloves. I finally thawed out 5 hours later. Really glad I went out though and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Hi Lucie

My last run was fun but my time wasn't good.. the wind was blowing so hard it nearly knocked me on my butt. I sincerely hope the weather conditions are calmer as far as wind for the race or I will have trouble. I hate running into the wind, if it's coming at me sideways I'm okay, but it slowed me down a good 20 seconds per mile overall, which isn't what I want. I ran about a 10K so I think I'm taking today off, I'll run again on Saturday but maybe just something short. I switched runner positions with my friend so my last of my 3 legs is a 7 miler. I figure I'll begin making my long runs an 8 mile loop of some sort so that I can get used to gauging the distance - then it will make the race distance pass by more quickly, I'm hoping. I think it'll be my most scenic leg, along the beach, so maybe I won't need it to pass by quickly. I did notice I felt great after my run, and I'm not really sore today either.

irun2win: I think as time passes you have to kind of change your expectations a bit. I used to run a 6:21 1600 and I think somewhere around a 23.50 5K - 18 years ago. I also used to run 50 miles a week when I was doing that, I was a kid in high school working part time and life was easy lol. I had an awesome coach and a great group of running buddies too. These days I have a family and I take on extra kiddos, and it's not practical for me to run that much nor do I think my body would love me if I did. I will be happy if I can keep with an 9:30ish avg for my relay and enjoy the whole run.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Good to be here,Lucy!

Iwas supposed to run 7 miles yesterday, but I did not. My left Achilles tendon has been sore for the last few days. I did not want to aggrevate it. Now, why is it sore? It certainly couldn't be the 5 mile run on Wednesday. The only other thing I can think of is that I started wearing different shoes (not running shoes). I went from my boot-like winter shoes to some lighter weight more Spring shoes. I think the new shoes do not have a heel to speak of and therefore they are stretching the tendon a bit. But that problem should be short lived. We are expecting another 6" - 1' of snow this weekend. I will be back in my winter shoes by Sunday. I hate winter!
