Re: My last run was...how was yours?

I did a 'grand prix' race for a local running club.  When we showed up they gave us a bib that had a time on the back.  We had to run WTHOUT WATCHES and try to guess our time and get it close to our goal time.

I SUCK with guessing time - so I just stuck with a group of folks.  One had a time goal of 23 min the other was 28 (not sure the 3rd guy) so I figured with my goal of 25 I could come in between them

We came in at 30:02 hahaha oh well.  I was pushing the jogging stroller and did about a 9:30 pace which is pretty good for me considering we had to run the HILLY side of the lake (they banned us from the flat side with mile markers!!) and we started at 8am (it was 77 degrees at 7:30am) with HUMIDITY.

Anyway - it was fun - met some new folks and had a great run.  I wanted to do about 6miles today but not starting at 8am!  I'll have to take the kid out with me tomorrow but I'll probably wake her up at 6 so we can get an early start.

    Its just too darn hot!!!!!

In a word, awesome. A 5K this morning. Beautiful weather, 70 degrees and clear blue skies. It was a familiar course, nice downhill to the finish, and I ran a new PR!!!

Best run in a long time. Did my long run, intending to do 8. Got into a fantastic zone and wanted it to go on and on, ended up extending the run to almost 9 miles. I wish all runs felt so fine!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Thanks for the info, Redrunner.

Pam, I'll look up the Big Peach Sizzler and let you know. Yea, that heat was a killer. I was thinking about how awkwardly silent it got around mile 5. All the runners around me had slowed down considerably and people were visibly exhausted. While I was annoyed by being slowed down, I didn't feel like I had the energy to keep dodging to pass folks. I've talked to several people who said they felt dizzy or funny at the end. I also just found out that someone I know passed out and didn't complete it. She's fine, but that really put things into perspective for me. I consider myself very lucky. On a good note, I lost 4lbs this week and I'm pretty sure I sweated those pounds off at the Peachtree. lol

I got in 6 miles this morning. We started at about 7:30, it was warm and muggy. I had to stop and use the restroom and noticed the moisture just sitting on my face and chest. Felt so gross, but I still got the miles in. I was so glad I ran with water today. I'm going to have to look into fuel belts because on longer runs, holding a bottle gets annoying.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

So I had said being off work wednesday I would get a morning run in to beat the heat....just not a morning runner unless its races...so I waited until about 11am and ran 4mi in 81 degree temp then headed to the pool for the rest of the day...friday I snuck in a 3 miler at lunch and the best part was that it was only 74 and there was a light rain the entire time so it was nice and cool.  Today was a 5k (virtual race) and did 31min flat then once again to the pool...not sure about a run tomorrow since I am working at the hospital all night and dont know that the energy will be there...supposed to be hot and sunny again tomorrow so my best bet might be to go for a run as soon as I get home despite being tired so that I can avoid the heat and not skip due to being too tired to deal with the heat....I think on it for the next 6hrs and see how I feel when I leave this place

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Good job for everybody on their runs. Keep it up!

For my two cents about when to run - I am here on the coast of Ecuador, about 200 miles south of the Ecuator, always hot and muggy, and I have become addicted to getting up at 4 a.m. to do my run. Then the streets are clear of traffic, the temp is as low as it is going to be (typically in the mid-to-high 70s) and when I start my day with the run I have so much energy to take me through the entire day.

Today was a short and sweet 2-mile recovery run just to get the blood flowing in my legs after my Saturday LSD. It felt good. Have a great week eveybody!

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

Opted to skip running today after the bad/tiresome night I had at work, I just wanted to come home and sleep....by the time I woke up at 1230 it was 92 and I had errands to run while MIL still had the little Bug...and of course, after finding out that Best Buy has the Garmin Forerunner 305 with HR monitor on clearance (Not marked or advertised) for 59.99 (reg 199.)  I had to finally get one....I know I will have to get used to the size because even though I wear big watched I dont run with them...But I wasnt going to pass up the price it will be forever before the smaller newer models come down that low...cant wait to get out and try it hopefully tomorrow!!!!!

I got a Garmin 305 a few months ago with the HR monitor and I love it. It did take a couple weeks to get used to everything - as you said the size is large on the wrist and the controls are a bit confusing at times. But the information you get from it is priceless! Let us know how it goes.

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

That is a great price on the Garmin.  I had scored one a couple of years ago around Christmas time for right around $90 and was excited to get it at that price.  I agree, it is a great tool and I use it almost daily in my runs.

Speaking of runs - I am working on week 9 of training for the Akron Marathon.  This is my second time doing it (last year was my first ever marathon) and the mileage is creeping upwards.  I know I am more prepared than I was last year.  The problem last year was that I died after mile 15 due to the hills and starting out too fast as well as hydration/ fueling issues.

Right now, I am battling a case of the doubts.  My Saturday run was supposed to be 7 miles at the 10:30/11min per mile.  I ended up doing 7 miles at 9:45/mile clip.  It was a new route and a bunch of hills so that was good.  I came out of that run hurting a little - cramped up from the run, tight calves etc but everything seemed to be ok.

Sunday AM, I was supposed to do the 15 miles but the legs were still sore so I waited until last night to start up again.  Started before 9pm, finished at 11:20 for 2hrs and 39min time.  I think it came out at a 10:37/min mile clip.

Overall, it seemed to work out ok.  I was really hurting though last night and the knee was acting up again.  I have my right foot that over pronates and that causes stress on the knee.  I thought I was doing good - but I noticed that my pace really slowed down as I went along.  First hour, I did 5.7 miles and the second hour I did 5.6.  The last 3.7 miles was in 39min.

While on the surface it appears that I am well within the training - I know the race is quickly approaching.  I know that I should trust the training and be patient and believe I can do it - but I was (sort of) dreading doing the run last night.  Knowing how I felt this morning makes me wonder how I am going to do 26.2 in just 9 weeks.  It does not help that my wife questions each step in the process (why run long on Sunday, why run at night, why so tired (if I ran in the am long) - and my personal favorite in relationship to the program I am following "What is he going to do - yell at you if you miss a day or do not follow the program?"

Anyway... just trying to get my mind in the right place.  After all - running a marathon is mostly mental ------ Right????

    My race times (2012)

    Race Schedule for the year:

May 6th Frederick Running Festival 1/2 Marathon

Re: My last run was...how was yours?

    Eric,

You sound like you are freaking out a little bit, which is understandable in some regards because 26.2 is an amazing goal.  But, you have already done one, so why would you think you would not be able to complete this one, when you have already done one a year ago?  Could it be because you are trying to focus on time this time rather than just finishing?  If your knee hurts, and/or you are really not feeling a run, just skip a day!  Really, an extra day or 2 off really makes a world of difference sometimes in preventing injuries AND burnout.  I have not done a marathon YET, but I am signed up for one in January and I WILL complete it.  I am reading Hal Higdon's marathon guide book right now and he is very encouraging.  He is stressing to first-timers to not worry about time - to just enjoy it and focus on finishing!  Maybe you are stressing too much about time/

About your wife - if she is a non-runner - maybe she is kind of tired of hearing about running so much.  I talk about it in small doses to my husband because it's not one of his main interests.  If you are looking for support, maybe you should post more on here.  Everyone around here seems super supportive and we all love talking about running!

Yes, I think running is mostly mental.  Training is necessary, but mostly mental!  I think you should take a couple days off and go have some fun other than running, maybe take your wife out to a nice dinner and a movie and not talk about running!  LOL!  Then, you will be missing your run and jump right back into it!

    Good luck!

A lot of people cranking out some good runs, way to go.

Monday morning I did a short, brisk 2-mile run, felt good to pick up the pace after a couple of slower runs. Tomorrow will be a short easy run before a more challenging tempo run on Wednesday.
