Weight Loss Buddies II

Hello!!

I am in the final stages of reaching my weight loss goal and would like to form a support group that is a continuation of the first thread "Weight Loss Buddies."

I hope you will join and help create a community in which we can be accountable to one another, as well as provide support. If you decide to post I would like you to answer the following questions so we can get this group going!

What weight did you begin at? What is your weight now? What is your goal weight? What are your reasons for wanting to lose weight? How do you plan on accomplishing this?

I suppose I will begin. I started at 182, I focused on losing weight at 170. Currently I am 144.5, and ideally I would like to be 130. I want to lose weight because I owe it to myself to be in good health. I plan on accomplishing this with the assistance of the Mayo Clinic Diet, and accompanying journal.

I can't wait to hear from all of you!

Best,

Steph

Steph, I'll join in. My heaviest was 164. am currently at 151. This is at the high end of normal wt range for my height, Mt goal wt is 135. My cholesterol runs high and I beleive this would help get it in normal. Also, every extra pound adds stress to joints, Many family members have had joint replacements, I want to do all I can to avoid that.

I will accomplish my goal by tracking my diet and exercise daily, while choosing healthy options and monitoring portion sizes.

I am 52 years old started running in 2007 to lose weight so far I have lost 60 lbs.

I have lowered my bad cholesterol, raised my good cholesterol and lowered my blood pressure.

Cholesterol problems run in my family, as does diabetes, heart trouble and blood pressure.

I am currently training for my 4th full marathon, The Southern Indiana Classic in April.

    Re: Weight Loss Buddies II

Steph, I've been hanging around that 150 mark for about a year and it is time to take it down another notch. I've lost to 135-140 in the past, but didn't maintain it. I've always been active, just inconsistent. Hence, doing the 100 Days Challenge, where you do at least 30 min. of sustained activity eveyr day for 100 Days.see thread http://community.active.com/thread/133046/100-day-challenge/0/0 I'm on day 53 now and can tell a difference in my overall tone. My eatting has not been the best....too many cookies and crackers.... so now, I need to buckle down and do what I know to do. Eat healthy,  choose non or low processed food, in proper portions and avoid the snacking. I've ceased eating after 8 pm. and will log my food. I plan to lose 1 pound per week until goal of 135 is met. I may reserve the right to waver on the weight, depending on if I look too gaunt.....interpret WRINKLED and OLD. My fat is around the waist and think that losing a few pounds will help my running effort as well.

My exercise is running 3 days per week. Walking, stationary bike or exercise DVD on other days, incorporated w/ weights (2X/wk)  & yoga 2X/wk. Time is generally around an hour for exercising.

Congratulations on your great results! Keep up the good work.

    Re: Weight Loss Buddies II

Hello, everyone!  I am interested in joining the group here.  I'm not nearly as close to my weight-loss goals as most of you seem to be, but I could really use some outside support.  A friend of mine (who lives cross-country) and I have been trying to support each other in weight-loss over the last year.  She, however, is so busy with her kids, just keeping her life together and her own workout schedule going that it's not really working for me.  I thought back to what helped me get through the C25k program last year and it was this site and the support offered here!  I'm hoping to find the extra "monitoring" I need in order to move my loss to the next level.

I'm 46 and started @ 237#.  I lost 20# before I started running one year ago.  That loss was mostly through getting rid of the big/bad stuff - not eating out, giving up alcohol, etc.  I started C25k a year ago @ 216#, did my 5k @ 206#, and have kept running since.  I've also monitored what I eat, but have good times and bad.  I've lost an additional 16# in the last year, so 36# total.  My next goal is 185#, then 165#, and finally, 155#.  If I ever went lower than that, I would be delighted.  But, that's my HS weight, so just getting there would be great!

My friend is a huge fan of South Beach and I have done that successfully in the past.  I've even started recently, but I find that the lack of carbs makes me feel very depleted and that my running suffers. The best thing for me to do is to stick to tracking my food (via Myfitnesspal.com), not overdo on the carbs.  I'm looking for a great program and may have to check out the Mayo Clinic Diet.  Do you think that would be good for me?  I'm soooooo open to suggestions!

I am a slow runner, but have increased my speed by 10% in the last year and try to run 3mi 3x/wk.  I usually do 4+mi in those sessions w/ the balance brisk walking.  I don't count my daily dog walks, which are brisk and 1-1.5mi.  I think the next step is to fill in the non-running days with a cross-training acitivity and will do that yet this week.

All of this has been a major lifestyle change for me.  I have never run before this past year or been very involved in athletics of any sort.  My weight came on after my sister's death 18yrs ago and I have dealt with the emotional issues successfully as they've arison.  I am committed to running, conitnued imprtovement in my diet, and additional activity in order to move closer toward my weight loss goals.  But, I need the next big boost!  I'm hoping to learn from all of you!

    Re: Weight Loss Buddies II

My girlfriend (who is my motivation, editor for my blog, cheerleader, inspiration, coach, trainer, etc) and I have been disagreeing on how much more weight I need to lose, I am 5'10" medium frame, I think 175 will be good, she thinks 170.

When I started running in 2007 I did not intend to become a marathon runner, that was not my goal. A friend and former co-worker challenged me to run the Cinicinnati Flying Pig Marathon in 2008, which I did. Unfortunately my friend fell ill right before the race and had to drop out.

I have posted on my blog before and after pictures, some tips and advice that I have learned along the way.

    Re: Weight Loss Buddies II

In early January I went to my doctor for a routine physical.  I knew I was overweight (and have been for the past 10-12 years) and was expecting the same lecture about diet and exercise (which I got).  As part of the physical I had the usual series of blood-work done and left the office with a reminder from my doctor to eat better and get more exercise.  That evening my doctor's head nurse called with some very disturbing news about my blood work.  My blood sugar was 102 classifying me as pre-diabetic, my triglycerides were 538 (anything over 200 is cause for concern) and they wanted to put me on medication, and my liver function (AST/ALT tests) were out of acceptable range as well.  After an ultrasound to rule out serious liver failure, the diagnosis was a "fatty liver".  The positive news about all of this, according to my doctor, is that it can all be cured with diet and exercise.  I'm 6'5", 323lbs (at the time) and will be 36 in March.  Needless to say that day was a wake-up call.

On January 24th, 2011 I overhauled my life.  I bought one of the bodymedia body sensors to track calories burned vs. calories consumed, activity, steps, and sleep efficiency.  At the same time I started the C25K program and began logging everything I eat.  Four weeks later I'm down 7lbs and will finish week 3 of the C25K tomorrow.  I'm still trying to figure a lot of things out such as nutrition, how hard and how long to work out, and fitting everyting into my daily schedule.  I've got a long way to go.  Hopefully this board will help me stay motivated!

    My goals are as follows

    - Lose 2lbs a week until I reach 230lbs (93lbs)

    - Run a 5K @ an 8 minute mile pace

    - Run the Des Moines Half Marathon in October 2011

    - Run the HyVee Triathlon in September 2012

    - Run the Des Moines Full Marathon in October 2013

    2012:

    1/29 - Ice Breakers Tri: 51:15

    Swim (400Y) - 7:46; Bike (10 Miles) - 20:20; Run (2 Miles) - 23:09

    2/11 - Red Flannel Run (5 Miles): 1:01:45

5/20 - Bluff Creek Triathlon (Sprint)

    6/10 - Trinona Triathlon (International)

6/24 - Copper Creek Triathlon (Sprint)

    10/21 - Des Moines Marathon

    Re: Weight Loss Buddies II

We have a plan of doing health and fitness workshops, she is Certified Personal Trainer and she is also a certified water aerobics instructor through the "Y", she has also done some work on childhood obesity.

This sumer I plan on becoming a Certified Personal Trainer.

She has had one knee replacement her other knee is bone on bone, so running is out of the question for her, plus she has lost over 100 lbs.

We could do PowerPoint Presentations share information we have learned, then we could break into groups she could do water, I could take the others running.

Her thought is before we start doing this, we both have a little bit more weight to lose, to be honest she feels that she has more weight to lose than me.

She says that when we go go marathons most of the runners are thinner than me.

Ok what do you think of our idea?
