Running is considered to be one of the best exercises both in long and short term basis. It keeps people healthy as well as helps in losing weight.

By building up muscle your body burns more calories even while sitting. It takes more calories to sustain muscle on your body than fat.
It is important to set goals and limits for oneself. For example, if you try to run way outside of your body's current limitations the first day, that sort of activity may result in injury or a very discouraging level of fatigue. It is important to progress, but take it slow at first, especially if you are new to running. Also, as others have said diet is going to play a key roll in weight loss and should be paired with exercise to gain the healthiest results. Goals are very important. Set reasonable goals, reach them and set another. This will help you stay on track until the diet and exercise becomes just a part of your daily routine and before you know it, they will become integrated as part of your lifestyle.

IMO, any exercise is good for weight control provided you are not exceeding your daily caloric needs. Use a calculator to find that number, such as this simple one:

Eat healthy diet, avoid junk and processed foods and exercise ( running, cycling, swimmin) regularly and you'll see significant decrease in your weight. This is the best strategy that I've successfully applied myself.
