Is it possible to get a decent forefoot strike in a standard shoe?

I am planning on purchasing a pair of minimalist shoes in the next few weeks, but in the meantime, I'm trying to retrain myself to run with a forefoot strike instead of a heel strike.  Is this difficult to do in a standard running shoe?  I feel kind of goofy trying to switch my gait and wonder if it's not just me, but also my shoes!
