The HEAT, my God the Heat!!! - What's your [favorite] trick for staying cool?

If you're a Seinfeld fan, you'll get the title.

I live in Pensacola, FL where the humidity is so high, our heat index temps (not the actual temp, but what it feels like) have already soared well above 104 degrees.  It's so hot, in fact, that I almost quit running FOREVER last Saturday, when the heat index temp at 7:30a was 85 degrees.  Of course, I was just being over-dramatic.

I freeze my water bottles and as that melts, I hydrate with the cold water during the run.  What's your trick?

Sorry, there really isn't any "trick"!  I can't tell you anything you don't already know about staying cool if you live in Florida.  You know to run early, stay in the shade, keep hydrated, etc.  Just common sense stuff you would do whenever its hot.   And I don't have to tell you that even if you do things like freeze a wet bandana to wrap around your neck or something like that, the real enemy is the hot, wet air that makes it feel like you are drowning when you run.   Been there/done that/got the t-shirt.  (I live in Georgia.)

All you can do is make your peace with it.  If you live in Florida, I'm sure you have already done that to a certain degree (pun intended!)  Just run slowly and take common sense precautions during the summer.  Remember that payback time is in the winter when everyone else here will be griping about running on ice in sub-freezing temps!

I hear ya on the heat!  I live in Mississippi so we're right there with you on the heat index and that lovely thing called humidity.  Thankfully I seem to slowly be getting used to it, so now everyone else just thinks I'm crazy when I get out to run.  Especially since my only time to run is at 3:00 PM!  Maybe the heat has fried my brain a little bit lol!

The naked running is definitely tempting in this heat, but I haven't even been able to convince myself to just run in a sports bra and shorts.  I feel very self concious since most of the women I pass are wearing shirts...why is it ok for guys to go topless, but if a woman tries to go "topless" everyone stares at her funny?!

Oh sorry, I misunderstood.  Lots of people do come here asking how to stay cool.  I wish there was a definitive answer to that!

But I have to say that I really don't mind the heat too much.  As uncomfortable as it is, I really love summer and I HATE, HATE, HATE winter.  I'd rather deal with summer heat and humidity any day than those dark, gray, dreary depressing days of winter.

Thanks for asking Tory.  I live in Brookhaven now (about an hour south of Jackson), but work up in the Jackson area which is where I run in the afternoons.  Thankfully the storms missed us!

I have to agree as far as summer and winter go.  I can't stand the cold of winter and the dreariness it brings, so I'll take the heat and summer over that any day.  It would be nice to actually have a Spring or a Fall, but alas, we pretty much only have Summer and Winter here!  I can tell I run slower on the hotter more humid days, but I'd rather be in the heat any day.  And since I run in the afternoon when it's hottest, I figure that will only help me when I run morning races as it will be cooler and hopefully I'll be able to pick up my pace a little bit.  Then hopefully any afternoon races, everyone else will be dying from the heat since they aren't used to running in it and I am, haha!  That's my hopes anyway

I live in Marietta, the northwest suburbs of Atlanta.  We get pretty good seasons here, and fall is the absolutely BEST time for running (spring weather is a toss up).   I visit South Georgia a lot, though, so I have experienced lots of runs in near-Florida conditions!

Here are two that I've used:

A bandana with ice cubes in it., tied loosely around the neck.

A running hat (or visor -- hats are too hot), soaked in water and thrown in the freezer the night before.

I agree with Katie the best way to deal with the heat is to confront it head-on. I often run in longsleeves on hot days rather than using sun block, esp. if it's for a couple hours or more. Feel-likes of 100 or more are my friend. I love the heat.. always have, and my hottest races are usually my best.

In the spirit of fairness to all you ladies I always wear a shirt now, but I make sure it's compression cool-max or equiv., which imo is better than bare.. and yes I've seen hundreds of buck-naked runners, lol...

I pretty much only run in my Under Armor Heat Gear.  It definitely helps as it helps to wick away the sweat and doesn't get weighted down like cotton does.  I don't see how people run in cotton t-shirts!  James, more power to you for running in long sleeves...I wish I could, but I get hot enough just in my shorts and heat gear t-shirt or tank!
