Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

I tried W9 2 days ago, but only made it 10 minutes before I had to walk.  It was horrible, and I was so worried over my first 5k this Saturday, looming over my head.

Today, I managed to attempt W9 again today, ended up running for 39 minutes, and managed to run 5k!!!  I was on cloud nine.  Tomorrow will be a rest day, and up bright and early for my first 5k 'race' on Saturday!!! Woohoo!

    Padvali -- Awesome!!!

Tonight was W7D2 for me.  So that's my third of four 25 min runs.  This one was actually a bit easier than the first two.  I managed to get my speed back up a bit (not quite as fast as when I had walk intervals but close).  The first ten minutes were gone before I knew it.  The last fifteen had some challenge but I felt good.  My calves are a bit tight because I'm a bit sore near my Achilles tonight. I've also run every other day so I've been tough on my body this week.  But I'm generally very pleased with my progress.

I'm down about 11 lbs too since I started which is nice!  But sometimes I think I should have lost a lot more given that I've gone from sedentary to running for 25 min in two months!

Tomorrow will be a rest day.  On Saturday I'm doing a walk/run -- not sure if I will just walk the 5k or try to run all or part. It's not being officially timed.

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

Completed Week 7 Day 2 this morning. Easier than the past two 25 minute runs and I had a better time.  Actually ran 2.15 miles in 25 minutes instead of just my normal 2 miles.  I decided to run with a water bottle this morning and it helped.  I just need a couple of sips around 15-20 minutes so that  I didn't feel like I was going to die by the end.  Drank the rest on my cool down walk home. Will definitely do that until it gets cooler here.

    Well Done Padvali!

    Just completed W7D2! Yeah!!!

25 min running no stops and made it

to 2.1 miles. Ankles and calves were

burning at the 15 min mark. Kind of a bummer

but everything else was OK. Noticed that

on the last 3 min of the run that my right foot

instep was in pain. Turns out I started a small blister

there during my run today. Really hurts.  Maybe my socks

did that as they were a thinner pair than I normally wear. I usually

never get blisters from running so this run surprised me.

    Keep On Running

Just finished Week 6 with my first 25 min. run.  I was a bit nervous but managed to run the whole time and my pace was 1:30s faster than my 20 minute run.  So excited!

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

Another week ending, only 29 days until my first half marathon - excited but nervous

So since I will be in torture chair in about an hour at the dentist, I at least have a happy memory to reflect on - my 10K!

Today  was my long run day - and I did 6.5 miles, or just over a 10K.  It took  me 1 hour 50 minutes, which doubled to reach 13 miles for my half  marathon would be 2 hours 100 minutes or 3 hours 40 minutes.  I want to  try to get 13.1 miles in 3.25 hours in (gasp!) 29 days, and I was  excited to see it's within my reach.

So tomorrow I do a light day - 3 miles only - and drive home to train some more.

A  relief to get a long run out of the way, and on pace.  I did my usual  run/walk - but I basically ran one song, walked for a 2 min song, ran  one, walked 2 minutes, etc.  (Running songs were 3.5 - 4.5 minutes  long).  Knee feels great, and legs are a little tight, but what do I  expect when I run almost twice as much as usual.

I could have done bits of that in longer batches of running but my goal today was to hit the 6 mile mark within 2 hours easily.  I can extend my running spurts each weekend now.  I actually feel great -  I still can't believe that 3 months ago I couldn't even jog for 1 tenth of a mile without breathing heavy.

    Love to run!

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

I had my first 5k 'race' today, as well as today being W9D2.  I learned a lot today...

#1, don't place myself at the middle of the group for starting, but near the end.  I started off too fast, and I pooped myself out, couldn't breath, and my heart rate was up in the 190's  I had to walk part of the way.

#2, breakfast.  It was a total flop.  I tried to eat something 1 hr prior to the run, but my tummy was too nervous so I couldn't eat more than 1/2 the little muffin.  I also lost a lot of my steam 1/2 way through the race.  Felt like I was dragging and really had to push myself to run.

#3, races that start RIGHT at the base of a hill suck!  And it was a LONG hill, more than I have ever had to run.  So between #1, and #3, it just ddidn't go as planned for the first mile of the run

BUT I am looking forward to my next 'race' in 2 weeks.  One guy finished the 5k in less than 17 minutes!  Amazing

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

I had my first race today.  Well, it was a fairly casual walk/run more than a race, lol!  But I had a lot of fun. I walked the first mile, then ran the remainder.  It was a good experience because it gave me a chance to run outside (I've been doing only treadmill) and also judge my pace (I went out way too fast and suffered for it!) So that counts as W7D3. On to Week 8!!!!

    Happy running everyone.

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

I finished W8D1 today. This is a bit scary to say but I found it to be fairly easy to do the 28 minutes!

The human body is an amazing thing. It's hard to believe that 8 weeks ago I couldn't even run for a minute and now I can do 28 continuously.

I feel like I've crossed some sort of fitness threshold. I'm starting to zone out a bit while running so that I don't have to 'count' every minute -- time just passes while I run.

I'm still not at the distance goal (made 2.7 miles in the 38 minutes) but that will come with time.

    Happy running everyone!

Continue to run 2.1 miles in 30 minutes.

Must have hit a running plateau or something.

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

I tried W9D1 yesterday, made it about a mile before my shin splints started yelling at me to walk!  Walking even hurts.  So I ran for about 12 minutes then had to walk, tried to run again about 5 minutes later - only lasted about 5 minutes.  Walked the remainder of the 3.25 mile loop that I do.  I am disappointed.  Has anyone else had shin splints?  I have put icy/hot on them with ice packs 3-4x/day as well as massaged around the shin bone and specific stretches I was told to do.  Any other suggestions?

Help!  I don't want to go backwards!

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

I'm not a sports med doctor but I'll tell you what worked for me.  I had them early on the first time I did the program a few years ago.

Rest, ice, ibuprofen, and stretching the calf muscles helped.

Here's an icing tip. Fill a Dixie cup with water, freeze, them rub the opening on the shin.  Make sure you are stretching both the calf muscles (typical stride stretch doesn't get the soleus).

Stride problems can contribute caused by flat feet, non-supportive shoes, running on the balls of your feet, running with toes pointed out.  I have high arches and when I tried to run in a lighter shoe (not Vibram 5 Fingers but one of Saucony's lighter shoes) I started to get them and had to stop using them.

Good luck -- let us know how you're doing.

Re: Starting Couch to 5K week of June 20th!

I have done all the things you mentioned, except the rest part.  I did take two days instead of running every other - but I don't think it was enough - I still walked 3.5 miles both days.  I will try to stretch my calf muscles a bit more too.  My shoes are awesome and I think my stride is okay - I may have the running store analyze it.

Thanks so much for the insight... I will keep you posted!

Maybe you want to consider taking a week off.  I know that's alot but I've been reading Runner's World Complete Book of Women's Running by Dagny Scott Barrios and she says not to be afraid to take that much time -- you won't 'lose' your fitness gains in a week but it will allow the body sufficient time to really mend.  I'm thinking about a week's rest from running after I finish W9.
