Anyone know what is going on with my muscles?

I am getting very frustrated with not being able to run much.  I did myself in - got an overuse injury back in March, was training for a half marathon.  Went to a sports doctor who diagnosed acute Bursitis in both hips and sent me to a Physical Therapist. It has been 4 months and I have done all the stretches and exercises (and continue them).  I also ended up getting cortisone shots in both hips.  I can run 2.5 miles now (was running 8-10 as my long run) however I went on the elliptical for 30 minutes doing intervals of level 1 to level 3 so not strenuous by any means and wouldn't you know my muscles (piriformis and "sit bone area") are in spasm again!  Just wondering if someone has had this experience and if I will ever get over it and back to running normally again?  I have tried so hard to not overdo it.  The doctor and PT have no answers for me.  I just want to run!

Have you ever tried the foam rollers? I used to have a lot of issues with my piriformis and started using the foam roller. It really helped me.

I think these types of injuries are chronic and take a long time to go away. I would avoid doing any exercise that aggravates it like the elliptical.

Have you tried pool running? It's actually a very good substitute if you want to keep your running fitness while healing.

All I know for sure is that it took many months for me to recover with my injury that sounds a lot like yours. But the good news it that it did finally go away and now I run pain free

Here is an article on pool running:

You do need a pool deep enough and also they said water temps made a difference. I know that I would actually work up a sweat on my forehead when I was doing it. Good luck!

(I'm going to try this again.  The first time, the system burped and my reply was gone.)

Although it might seem to be a radical or even counterintuitive step, you might try losing your shoes.  The kinds of pains and injury you're seeing are quite possibly the result of the style of running that is allowed and even encouraged by conventional running shoes.  Shoes allow you to heel strike and the shock passes up your legs, into your spine and right to the top of your skull, having an affect all the way through.

In Barefoot style running, the emphases are on GENTLE footfalls, short, high cadence strides, and a heightened awareness of your form as you run.  You can find many excellent and informative posts here and links to related subjects like Chi Running and Pose Method.  Read up and you might find that there's a path to happy running for you yet.

Yup, I'm not surprised that you encountered some negative responses from conventional running guys.  Non-BF runners usually just don't believe it's possible to change something so basic as the shoes they run in.

Do your own reading and make your own decision.  I strongly recommend you check out the Barefoot Runners Society, and their Barefoot 101 "How to start" section.  If you want to go one step farther, try to find a copy of Barefoot Ken Bob's relatively recent book on BF running.  I hear it's excellent.

You're right, though on the "start out easy" part.  I've been doing  the BF thing for about 15 months now and I'm very happy with it. I do use Vibrams in the winter and for unfriendly terrain.  I'm still learning and developing my supporting muscles and my feet.

    Good luck and run well!
