Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

...WE WEAR SHORT SHORTS!!!  But why?  I always give the cleche (sp) anwers of "aero-dynmacicity (word?), keeps you cooler, better range of motion, its part of the culture, and hey I look good in them!"  Are these really the answers???  Why do we do it?

I don't wear them, and can't really figure out why anybody else does.  Not intending to offend anybody, just giving my .02.

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

I like short shorts, but I'm too modest to wear them too short in public.  Fortunately, I live in a rural area and I run at 5:00 in the morning, so there are plenty of oppurtunities for short shorts and no shirt running!

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

I find that most people who do wear them (myself included) do so for primarily functional reasons, and that those who do not wear them do so for primarily fashionable reasons, avoiding embarassment and so forth.

For me, function always trumps fashion when it comes to athletic wear.

I think you would find it a very difficult argument to make to argue that knee-length shorts offer more in terms of function when running 15 miles on a warm, sweaty summer day.

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

Gotta agree with YB on this one.

This weekend was the first weekend I could go outside in shorts for a run. All the other pairs were in the washer, but I wasn't about to go in pants, so I threw on my shortest pair and took off down the road.

And ofcourse, about an 1hr. into my run, sure enough, "Hey NICE SHORTS". I just said thanks and kept running.

But I've tried running in Basketball shorts, but man, their are some serious chaffing issues that you have to watch out for too!

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

What is all this silly fuss about short shorts? That is the only sensible thing to wear for competitive running; I guess Americans have become so puritanical that they want to do marathons and triathlons fully dressed.  They look quite ridiculous to me. If my boyfriend ran a marathon in those baggy horrors I'd leave him, and womens marathon gear is more like a bikini, and very comfortable it is too

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

Running shorts seem almost long to me!  I run in so many races and many of the women are in very short boy shorts or bun huggers.  I think they look great in them, but I still prefer my "long" shorts.

I run in spandex, I can't stand having bunching between my legs now.  I do have a couple of short shorts that I like for longer distances or gym workouts because they breathe better, but I'm a spandex girl!

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

love the short shorts, and because runners are lean we look good in them. I feel cooler in them - not cooler as in i'm cool man, just less hot, but i have been told i look hot.... ummmm this is getting confusing..

just love the short shorts

I just bought some short shorts today mainly for the reason that I think it's hilarious. They are so short, it's ridiculous. :P

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

I don't.
And it's function so much as fashion (and concern for the eyesight of those around me.)

--- I will get bad heat rash if I don't have shorts that cover most the way down the inside of my thigh.

Re: Who wears short shorts?!?!?!?!?!

They are much more comfortable.   I can't imagine doing any significant run (track workout, race, long run, etc.) in long shorts.  I feel like my legs are suffocated in them.  And I don't think I look good in them - I'm lean, but my quads are enormous.

The #1 best solution to comments about (a) the length of your shorts or (b) your running without a shirt is to moon 'em.  It's so empowering.  I don't like giving the finger because the finger is generally given in anger, which means they got to you.  They win.  Dropping the short shorts a bit, on the other hand, shows that you simply have no respect for those who engage in such behavior.  Go on your merry way.  You win.
