Re: Maine Runners

I'm running the Mid-Winter Classic.  Last year's race was rescheduled because we got dumped with a lot of snow during the original race date.  The rescheduled date wasn't much better either as it snowed/rained during the race.  However, it was still a fun race.  The way this winter's going, I think road condition will be ideal for winter racing.

Re: Maine Runners

Curly girl, good call posting on this forum, I didnt even know if it still existed...Hell yea I'm in....Ill do the 10 miler.  Hey this is very tentative and I guess we'll have to see how things go, but is anybody doing the sugarloaf marathon??  Maybe if I see someone on here who wants to cowboy up and try it, Ill do it too.  It would be my first, although I have done 2 Half Ironman Triathlons...I'd just like to get a marathon under my belt before I got to a full Ironman race(probably next year).  Let me know guys!!!

Re: Maine Runners

TriatheleteX, I ran the Sugarloaf Marathon last year and it was my first.  The course is advertised as a really fast course (and I see the potential), but during race day, the course end up being a bit challenging to me as you're either going uphill or downhill.  I was on pace for a 3:30 finish, but end up hitting the wall at mile 18 and had to walk in the last 3 miles.  Anyhow, I ran 2 marathons last year and I told myself that I was going to take a break from the training/running of marathons, so I was just thinking about doing the 15K.  However, knowing myself, I may end up changing my mind and run the full instead.  Either way, I'll see you at the 10-mile race and possibly at Sugarloaf (full).

Re: Maine Runners

I will not be at the Mid winter 10 miler, I live Virginia Beach now.   I have ran the race twice, the last time 2 years ago.  Both times I wore spandex and gloves, and both times it was to warm for gloves.   It is a very challenging course, lots of hills.   Congrats Curly on your running achievements.  Good luck at this years race.
Speaking of Sugarloaf marathon, I ran Sugarloaf back in 1994, my first marathon, I was 19 at the time.  My goal was to qualify for Boston, I took off with the leaders, around 7.5 miles you ran a nice 3 mile hill, then one mile down, this one mile downhill was a killer on the quads, I think we ran 5minutes flat for that mile.  I manage to get to mile 20 before I hit the wall,  I ran 20 miles in 2:00:12 not  a very smart move for a first timer. Then  I hit the wall and finished in 3:06 qualified for Boston.      My quads hurt for 3 weeks after that marathon.  Took me 6 years before I attempted another one marathon.

Re: Maine Runners

We were lucky in December. Temperatures were above normal. This week is a different story. I ran outside last night. Tonight and tomorrow will be on a treadmill in my basement. Sunday looks possible for an outside run.

How's the training going for the midwinter classic 10 miler?

Re: Maine Runners

I was running outside in the late fall, but the darkness and cold temps got the best of me (almost got hit by cars several times) so I finally broke down and joined a local fitness center.  I never thought I could enjoy running on a treadmill, but must say that I have actually learned to appreciate it more than anything not so much enjoy.  It is nice not to have to worry about the weather or the darkness and I really like being warm, and safe.  The bad part for me has been the fact that I have been training for the Disney World Marathon and running my long runs on a treadmill really took some getting used to.  But I did it and actually completed three in excess of 20 miles (a 24, 26 & a 28 miler)!

I fly out tonight for Florida and look forward to a projected 40+ degree start at 6:00 Sunday morning with temps rising to the 70's. I am hoping to qualify for the Boston Marathon with a time of 3:30.

It's nice to see and hear from some other Mainers. Stay safe and Keep Warm!

Re: Maine Runners

That sounds great!  I didn't know that so many "mainers" come to this site....  Meeting might be kind of fun!  I live in South Portland, go to USM in Portland and live in Raymond in the summer time.  I wish that there were more trails around here to run.  I like Macworth and the Audobon society trails but they are pretty short.  I also like running through Fort Williams to Willard Beach and the Bug Light and back to the fort.  Any place near the ocean is the best.

Re: Maine Runners

The Mary Walk/Kerryman's Pub race in Saco is a good one.  I would've ran in that race last year, but had just run the MA Law Enforcement 1/2 Marathon the week before and the rescheduled Mid-winter Classic the week before that, so I opted to do the walk instead.

CG, have you signed up for the Big Lake 1/2 Mary already?  Do you know whether the race is full already or not?  I too thought and want to do the tri-state 1/2 Mary series, but I had a tough time logging onto the Big Lake site, especially the sign-up link.  I'm not sure if that was because the race is full or whether its my computer.

Re: Maine Runners

CG, no I haven't sign up for the Hyannis half yet.  I signed up and ran the Dublin Marathon last year w/TNT and Big Lake half is one of their event in NH, so although I wasn't going to pledge money for TNT, I had wanted to run that race to meet up with the coaches, etc.  In addition to the Big Lake, I was thinking about doing the Maine Marathon this fall, so that would be 2 out of the 3.  However, the Tri-State series are 3 half marathons, so I'm not sure if I run the full in Maine and would still still qualify as a participant in all 3 races of the series.  I really don't know what's holding me up in signing up for the Hyannis half, but I'll come to a decision soon and hopefully my decision will put me out on the course.
