Re: Maine Runners

jwmacleod67 - No, I've never ran around Mighty Hill Road or Huston Road, the section of Route 114 that I run is Dingley Spring and Spiler Road (Route 35 end of 114).  However, funny you mentioned Mighty Hill and Huston roads because my wife has recommended me to head down Buck Road and then onto Huston Road, but....

As for deciding on the half mary in October, there's no rush. I would say to keep doing what your doing now and add on mileage slowly (remember the 10% rule!!). To get in adequate/serious training, you would probably need to decide by early/mid June. That would give you about 18 weeks to train, which is about the length of some marathon programs.

Good luck and happy running.

[edited to say early/mid June]

JW

Thanks for the info for Bikerreed I'll check that out.

As far as the half I think you have time once April comes and the weather will hopefully get even better you can up your mile.
They even have calculators:http://www.marathonguide.com/FitnessCalcs/ that tells you how long you should train for a race. I know when I first started pop in my time and it told me that I needed 6 months to train for the marathon. It also told me that it would take me 4:30 to finish at that pace.

I started running in May last year and ran the Beach to Beacon because that's what I set for my goal and I trained in Raymond and that was the best thing I could of done. While people were complaining about what they thought were hills I just laughed. I had one course that had what I would call hills off the Raymond hill road and valley road it was also most 8 miles.
My goal this year is to run the half also and I've been up to 10 or 17 miles in the last 3 weeks but I tried to slow my self down a little because I was adding to much milage all at once.

Re: Maine Runners

I ran the irish rover today.. it was fun, but that hill was a killer!!!! i am still recovering from my half last week, so i was happy to run 24 something in this race.. i did not see any mile markers on the course.. and i wish they had those.. oh well.. i was running for fun .. basically i decided yesteday to run because i knew in my mind i needed to get out there with a lot of other runners... oh.. and a few porta potties would have been nice... my daughter had to help me move a dumpster out of the way so i could squat behind it!!!

we runner's lose all modesty.. but i did not want to get arrested for indecent exposure!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I was there also very nice day and you were right about the markers. I think the reason there was no pottie's was the bar was open, I guess? I ran in the 26 but considering the wind and the hill that was not bad for me. The other big thing is I should not talk so much I guess!

Re: Maine Runners

Hi guys - I was there too yesterday - met speedymama as well!  My nephew kyle did great - I finished, but wasn't expecting any more than that since I did such a poor job training for this.   !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/wink.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/wink.gif|border=0!

thanks for the info on the half as well - I'm going to check out that website and plug my numbers in today so that I'll know how soon I need to decide. My biggest fear is training for it alone as a newbie - my mpw has dropped significantly over the past couple of months for a number of reasons, so I'll bet I will need to get going right off if I'm going to be able to participate. Yikes!

Re: Maine Runners

Hey!  Didn't get to post earlier this week, but I ran the Road Rover Sunday as well, and was actually pretty happy about my time. 26min.  Not bad considering I"m almost 7 months preggo, and have only been doing treadmill running since November.  Met Jan (jmcleod) and her nephew there.  Seems like they ran a good race.  Hope to see her at more events.  I'm hoping to do at least one more 5k before this baby gets here!
Anyone doing beach to beacon.  I'm thinking about it, although 6.2 miles a little over a month post partum I'm not too sure about.  Haven't run it before, how is it?

That was very good and I bet it was nice getting outdoors to run on such a nice day. We must of had almost the exact times!
Hey what is everyone doing this weekend? I'm not sure about the coffee run MTC or the Merryman myself only time tells.
Hope everyone has a good weekend and can get some running in.

Re: Maine Runners

I agree with Curlygirl about the  B to B I ran it last year as a goal I set to do and thought it was great. I've been waiting for two month to signup and hope to drop my time this year  by 5 minutes. It has a limited registration of 5000 and it closed out early last year, so if your planning on running it you need to get in.
This year my goal will be the half M in Oct. which will be my first one. It will be interesting to see how I handle that, right now my long runs are 6 miles and I hope to buildup as better weather approaches.

Re: Maine Runners

I would love to run the Beach to Beacon this year too.  Makes me a little nervous just thinking about it.  Those hills near Fort Williams seem a little intimidating!  What can you all tell me about this race?

Re: Maine Runners

those hills are easy!!! i love them!!! i run a loop that has them on the end of it and i feel like i know them inside and out.. just get yourself out on the course a few times so you know what to expect on the hills..

boothy.. you will be fine for the half.. i started runnning last march and rana half in february.. you just need to run your regular runs and get your long run gradually up.. if you can d a long run of 6 now.. you can probably easily do 8 or 9... i found that i had done a long run pretty mich once a week fromoct thruogh feb.. at first i just kept it at 10 miles for my long run.. but if you throw in a 12- 13 mile run every 3rd week or so you will be good..

also, do not underestimate the importance of speed work..i did not use it to the t.. but i followed the intermediate half plan on this site and found it worked well.. good luck!!!!!

Re: Maine Runners

Well folks it's been pretty quit on this board the last week or so how is everyone doing?
Anyone been doing any interesting runs lately or any interesting races coming?

I'm gearing up for the corporate track season and hope to have a improved season with a year of running under my belt.
We will start practicing in April and the season starts May 12.
I hope to do a few more races before we get into the heart of our season. Then after the national I'll do the B to B and can't wait for that I had a great time.

Has anyone done the coffee run with MTC yet and how was it?
Also is any going to train in Lewiston with the MTC and the coach there using?

Well hope everyones runs are going well and the weather gets better again.

Re: Maine Runners

Curly

I hoping to go to Lewiston myself it will depend on our practice schedule.

I'm with Unumprovident, I just started last year and it is a very good time and real nice people in the MECTA league.

Who does your friend captain? Are there other runners where you work? we have a number of teams that combine to make a bigger team! you can also be a draftee for a fee and that would be another way to join. what a draftee is: is a runner who one of the smaller teams can pick up to fill there rosters.
Check out mainecorporatetrack.org let me know and we can talk more about it. This is a big year with the national relays coming to Portland in July.

Let me know if you need more information!
