Re: Maine Runners

Another Maine runner checking in. I am starting up again after a ten year+ retirement. Been working out and losing weight for a couple months now. I'm running every other day easy for now. As the rest of the weight comes off I will add the miles.

I will probably be running the Mary's four miler in this weekend. I'm not "ready" to race but I live in Saco so it'll be a good starting point for getting back into things.

Glad to see other Maine runners in here. Though I am a Maine native I did all my running in NH during High School and College.

Hello twicearunner,

I though I would also respond to your question in your other post here.

I am in the central Maine area. The last couple years I have trained for and raced mostly 5K's from Gardiner up to Bangor. I have been increasing mileage, and plan to run longer distances farther from home - some close to you. There is a 20 mile race March 30 from Kittery, Maine to Salisbury, Massachusetts. I would like to run the Beach to Beacon 10K. Also the Maine Marathon in Portland in October will be my first Marathon.

Good luck in the Mary's four miler this weekend. Let us know how you made out.

Re: Maine Runners

Thanks MR

I'll let you know how it goes. I'm running heavy but I wanted to start somewhere. It'll be kind of a time trial for me, or a fast training run. I am excited though as it has been soooo long since I have lined up and waited for the gun.

I may run the Beach to Beacon as well, but it's hard to say at this point. I've been known to drive some miles to a race so who knows I may look arround up your way.

Re: Maine Runners

Hello, all you Maine runners from the Augusta/Gardiner/Manchester area.

I grew up in Augusta but have lived in Chicago for a number of years. I'll be in Augusta next weekend and am hoping to find a place to run on Saturday morning. Looking for a relatively flat (I remember running the hills around Augusta in high school X-country and I know my midwest-trained legs couldn't handle them right now.) place to do about 8 miles. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Re: Maine Runners

jlabbe,

Welcome back to Maine. Unfortunately, I will be out of town over the next couple weekends.

I have a hard time finding flat places to run. I haven't looked at it, but the Hallowell Rail Trail may be ok to run on now. It is a two-mile stretch between Augusta and Hallowell. It starts across from the Old Winthrop Road in Hallowell. It travels next to the Kennebec River, so it is quite flat.

I ran on it a few times last summer. When the snow came, I stopped using it. It may be muddy and snow covered, but the sun has been warming things up nicely the last few days!

Re: Maine Runners

Thanks, Mainerunner, for the suggestion of running along the river. Now that I think even more carefully about the geography around Augusta, I'm reminded that much of the area is like the Rockies but without all the level places.

Does anyone have any other favorite funning routes to share? Since I'm going to be staying at my parents' lakeside home in Manchester, I'm going to have to drive a bit to find a place to run anyway. A quick drive down to Gardiner wouldn't be out of the question if it meant being able to run on a route of known distance. Any ideas, anyone?

Re: Maine Runners

Mary's Walk and four mile race.

I ran my first race in over a decade Sunday. I'm still running heavy and have not been training long but I was happy with my race. After so long I did go out fast and held it through two miles 12:26. Then it caught up to me though. I had a slow third mile but picked the pace back up some to finnish. My final time was 26:40. I am pleased with that at this stage in the game. I'll be looking for a 5k in about a month. That will give me time to lose some more weight and log some more miles. I'd like to run my next race @ 6:15 pace.

Re: Maine Runners

twicearunner,

Congratulations about the race. You are about 40 to 45 seconds per mile faster than I am now. (I'm ok with that though)    Keep at it.

Re: Maine Runners

The Maine Games are coming!!

If you have not already heard, the Maine Games will be held in Portland this June. This will be the first year for Maine. The games are part of the State Games which are held in many other states already. Some of you may be familiar with the Bay State Games in Mass...same thing.

There will be a full Track and Field competition up to the two mile. If you do a search for Maine Games you'll find the web-site with all the info. I am not sur eof the address.

Spread the word, It would be great to see this take off. I also read that if you place in an event this year OR next year you can compete at the national event the in 2005.

I haven't had much luck with winter races. Didn't we get several inches of snow on the day of the midwinter classic 10 miler last year? I ran in the 'Run for the Border' 10 miler (March) two years ago, and, my word, the wind was horrible. Last year I signed up for the 'Eastern States 20 miler' (March again), and it rained cats and dogs!

Good luck if you run it! I've been running on a treadmill this week due to the mess in the roads. I may venture outside tonight though.

Re: Maine Runners

I am going to run it.. when i started running last march and could not run for more then 2 minutes.. my town issued the "cape challenge". .. challenging cape residents to run all 4 races that are in cape elizabeth.. so far i have done all 3.. (bringing my 5k time from 25:22 to 23:56 from June to November)... and there is no way i am going to miss this last event!!  It was the reason i kept running,,, when inever thought i would be able to put 3 miles together.. now i am planning on running the 10 mile race and doing my first half marathon down in hyannis at the end of february!! hopefully the race won't get snowed out like last year and interfere with my half!!!!!!!!!!!!
