The type of crime you're describing is pretty much all we get around here. People look for an opportunity, and the open garage door provides it for them. That goes for my neighborhood as well. Every month, the local police officer puts a reminder in the newsletter about closing garage doors.

If you can keep your garage door closed when you're not in it, you should enjoy the neighborhood. In our area, there have only been two reports of crimes against people that I'm aware of. Both happened after dark when no one is supposed to be there anyway.

I spent several weeks working in Memphis. Memphis is a lot rougher.

Thanks for your feedback. I really appreciate it. Yes Memphis is rough. Fotunately we live in Bartlett- a suburb of Memphis. Our area is not too bad. But, the rough stuff is not to far away!

I heard Keller has some parks with "hike/bike" trails. Do you know of any good trails in the north area? Thanks again.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

I do not know the addison area excessively well, but if you have the opportunity to travel/drive a bit there are numerous areas to run with in about 20 minutes of there.  White Rock Lake is about a 9.2 mile loop around.  You can get to it by going east on 635 then south on 75 exit mockingbird and go east about 4miles until you reach west lawther then veer off at west lawther you will see a parking lot just to the right on the sw corner.  Most locals call it the runners lot.  Head either direction and run in a circle and you'll make it back

we have social runs at all four of the Run on! stores on wednesdays at 6 p.m. they are easy/fun runs of about 6 miles but people will run varying distances, if you click the Run On link on my signature you can get directions to any of those four stores there.

Lake Grapevine has a great mountain bike trail that is nine miles long so you can do out and back of any distance up to 18 on it. check out www.nttr.org[/URL" target="_blank"> , north texas trail runners, for more info on it. You might also look at www.mapmyrun.com[/URL" target="_blank"> and enter addison texas or the zip code of your hotel to see any loops local runners may have posted as well. There is a 5k and 15k on the south side of lake grapevine on next saturday if you're in town for it as well called Bold in the Cold put on by a great local running club The grapevine runners and walkers or RAW. Their website is www.runnersandwalkers.com.[/URL" target="_blank"> They also hold weekend and weekday club runs welcome to all. Hope that gets you off to a good start in finding some places to run. Enjoy your stay! !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/smile.gif|border=0!

cheers

The main one is in Bear Creek Park. You can actually start over in the Keller Sports Park (where the soccer and baseball fields are) and head east into Bear Creek Park. Depending on how far you want to go, you continue east on the trail (concrete unfortunately) until you get to Keller-Smithfield Road. If you want to go farther, cross Keller-Smithfield and jump onto the road that's just across the street (can't remember the name right now). That road goes through Hidden Lakes and has a couple of nice hills on it.

To the south of where you are is the Heritage neighborhood. There are also some hike/bike trails in there, but I haven't been on them enough to give any decent feedback. They look nice, however.

Speaking of trails - while going up to Lake Grapevine is a great option (and RAW is a great club if you're looking for a running community to hook onto) , people living up in north FW sometimes fail to realize that in the same amount of time it takes to drive up to Grapevine, you can get to the Trinity Trails - a huge system with both paved and unpaved segments going on for 10s of miles in just about all directions.

BTW - I've lived in Park Glen nearly 10 years and find that the biggest crime problem is property crime - and generally crimes of opportunity. Open garages. Stuff left in cars. unattended bikes. They're all pretty much fair game. It's always seemed like a relatively safe place for a person on the streets, though. My wife is always out walking (by herself or with the dog) - day and nite. Although she does set some limits (no walking thru parks in the dark) - she's never expressed any fears for her personal safety.

yar

Hey Cora,

How your half marathon in Houston go? And did you have an travel complications going or coming back?

Oh btw, I don't know if your daughter has told you or not--

I'm playing piano on a concert with the Alvarado H.S. Choir on Saturday evening Feb. 10.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

No Ray, she hasn't told me yet.  She may not remember your name.  But, if you're playing for our HS choir, I'll be there watching Emily, so I will definitely look forward to seeing you.

The half went great Ray! If I can sort my thoughts out, I'll do a race report later, but for now I'll just give you the highlights. My goal was 1:30:00 and I finished in 1:25:39, so obviously, I am tickled about that. The Houston course is flat with the exception of one short hill somewhere between mile three and five, I think. Crowd support was great, even in the less than desirable neighborhoods. Split times were called clearly at every mile. The weather was perfect. I didn't feel any pain or discomfort until about mile nine. Then I felt blisters starting to form on that bone behind my big toe. But it wasn't anything that couldn't be ran through. When I finished, I saw that I had actually bled through my shoe. I told my son that was my battle scar. Both feet are fine today, I am just sore all over.
As for Houston, I don't have anything nice to say about that town. The hotel service (downtown Courtyard Marriott) was awful. Couldn't find a "good" part of town. People, for the most part, were cold and unfriendly-except for anyone involved in the race-they were all great! We did drive down to Galveston while we were there and toured a submarine and ship and went to the Aviation Hall of Fame. Also the Space Center. So it was a good trip. Left Houston at 10:30 AM on Sunday, and managed to miss any ice, but saw where that part of Texas had sustained quite a bit of flooding.
Here's my race stats....
36th female, out of 3,985 overall.
5th female, out of 700, in my age group.
4th female from Texas.
So...even though I did not place, I am still very satisfied with how things turn out, and happy that I finished my first half marathon!

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Cora,

Great job! I knew you could pull off an impressive Half. I remember that Labor Day a few years ago and how jazzed you were that you ran your first 15k. (That was the one we got rained on, as I recall.)

Two questions:
(1) Is there a marathon on your horizon?
(2)  Do you plan to run Haltom Stampede on Feb 10?  I'm planning to do the 10k.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Thanks Sarah and Ray.  Yeah, at my age, pretty much any "first" is a thrill for me.
No, don't have any marathon plans, but I was a little surprised at how much I enjoyed the HM.
Yes, I think I'll do Haltom, but they have apparently changed things up quite a bit.  The good news is, I think that means less hills.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Thanks MaryLou.  I did the Coyote Chase 5K a year or two ago, and there are WAY too many hills in Weatherford!  I can't even imagine doing a HM with that many hills, and in September heat!  !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/eek.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/eek.gif|border=0!
