Re: DFW runners! New thread

Cora! It was fun yet absolutely brutal. Quite a challenging course. I had a pretty hefty chest cold all week before but was healthy enough to run. the weather was a bit warm and it rained on us for the first 30 minutes or so... I went through the turn around in an hour and totally crashed with about 2 miles left. Walking and runnign and missing a turn at the end I managed to hang on to snag the overall win in 2:05:45. The overall marathon winner ran 4:01. Not my greatest race experience but the event itself is at a pretty location with a great group of folks supporting and running the event. I would like to go back next year and redeem my personal goals and expectations.

How has your running been? Any exciting races in the future? Drop a line everyone. Lets do a spring check in

I've registered for the Half at Grasslands and am just looking to steadily increase my mileage and possibly pursue a fall marathon.... Happy running all....

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Congratulations on your overall win. I had a stomach/sinus/fever thing going on the two weeks before Cowtown, but I think I'm finally shaking it. I hate it when some kind of sickness creeps in right before important races (or important to us anyway). I'm glad you were able to do so well despite that.

Not sure what my upcoming races include. They're changing a few things in a few races. The only race I'm pretty much 100% sure on is the Zoo Run...they're going to have a 10K this year, and last year they said they would comp my entry due to the results/award fiasco. And I think I would like to shoot for the half marathon this year at White Rock (gives me plenty of time to train right). Looks like you're leaning more towards the longer distances, aren't you?

My school district was talking about hosting a 5K to coincide with their health fair, but they had to back out because it was going to cost too much. I was pretty excited there for a minute. There's actually quite a lot of runners surfacing here in Alvarado.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Glad to hear you'r feeling better too Cora. I might see you out at the zoo run. Maybe if I do I can finally get you the award from our relay two White Rock Relays ago

Anyhow, have a great run!

cheers

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Cora, Paul and others, did you get a flyer in the mail for the fiveK in Dallas sponsored by Brinker? Free shoes to each AG winner.

After working all winter on mileage and LT work, I'm ready to go into racing mode. I figure it will take me 3 races to get in shape, so I start Saturday with the Greenville ave. 5K. Anybody doing that one? Spareribs

No, I haven't heard about that one. What's it called and when is it? Brinker is the founder of the Race for the Cure, right?

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Yes Cora, they are a big sponsor. I forgot to mention it is April 14th. We got the flyer in the mail. Reverchon Park and Turtle Creek. I'll post the details tomorrow, sorry don't have the flyer handy and on the way out the door.

Last time I won a pair of free shoes it was that Tour de Fleurs at White Rock and I was so excited, then it turned out they were Fila shoes, must have been some discontinued line as they are terrible. Most races where you win shoes, you get a certificate for X dollars from one of the local stores.

In life, you always get paid back I think. I ran the slowest tenK ever recorded by a man in any age group, and won the AG mostly because no one ran the tenK! Served me right I guess. Spareribs

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Here it is: Camper Scamper benefiting Camp John Marc. April 14th.

Okay, now I have to back pedal a bit. This is a Luke's run, and as much as I like Luke's, the fact is that RunOn and Luke's both do outstanding jobs in local race management.

I live in Coppell and visit Paul's store a lot, and I am a huge supporter of RunOn races. Paul himself is a terrific runner and very professional in his work. They do an outstanding job. I also run many races that Luke's puts on. To be fairminded, let me just insert one editorial comment:

The two biggest and best local running stores, Luke's and RunOn, deserve your patronage for the efforts they put in to boost running and races in the metroplex, so given you have many sources of buying running shoes and apparel, for heaven's sake, don't buy off the internet, or from the chains like Academy, or Athlete's Foot in the malls. Buy your stuff locally from the stores who support us, the runners. These guys are all part of us. Spareribs

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Oh yeah....BUNCH of races on April 14th! I won't make Camper Scamper, but I'm pretty sure I wouldn't win my age group at that one. Maybe based on last year's results, but you never know. It does look like a fun race though.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Hey! Anyone doing the River Run 8k this weekened (March 17)? I'm planning to register tomorrow. Haven't run this race before, but I run parts of the course all the time (especially the gravel trail on the north side of the Trinity River between Beach Street and Belknap).

I'm planning on going. My first time for this race also. Are you going to the running clinic on Friday?

No, unfortunately. We have an event at church Friday night.

I'll see you on Saturday morning, though.

BTW, I ran the course this morning, and I noticed a few things:

-The trail forks at a few places where it's not real obvious which fork to take; I hope they have adequate markers Saturday.
-There are muddy spots, even on the paved part of the trail. (Not a big problem, but something to watch out for.)
-There's an AWFUL LOT of trash washed up at the low-water crossing east of Beach Street, and I mean TRASH!...a vacuum cleaner, bottles, cups, household grabage bags, not to mention logs and other debris. It's not so bad you can't step over it or navigate around it, but it's at least an eyesore. I hope they clean it up before Saturday. (Oddly enough, there's no trash at the low-water crossing by the 4th Street bridge.)

I'm hoping for a PR. I've never done as well on 5 miles/8k as other distancesthis according to McMillan's equivalent performance predictor. Either I've gone out too fast like 5k pace and ended up slowing down, or else run it all slower than I'm capable. So Saturday is an experiment on how to run my best 8k.

Weather looks to be good.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

A bit tough to run that Greenville Ave 5K as it was mobbed. I got a 3rd in AG behind Bill Shaw and David Cromer (19:15 for Bill, 20:15 for David; I was 20:53.)

Beautiful day to race however. RunOn did a great job with the results. Cliff Couch announced. How did everyone else do? I know there were several racing opportunities. Spareribs

Re: DFW runners! New thread

Thank you. And congratulations on your age group win. Hope River Run was a really nice race...great course, very nice people. Also, the running clinic and getting to hear Gilbert Tuhabonye speak was a great oppurtunity. He also spent some time with us before the race doing stretches and helping us warm up.
Only bad thing about yesterday was when I left. As soon as I got off I-30, onto I-35W southbound, traffic came to a STAND STILL. It took me 90 minutes to cover I35 between I30 and I20. It was unreal.

Re: DFW runners! New thread

I must be a thread-killer. Minute I start posting on a thread, everyone bails.

Am looking for a good fiveK on March 31 or April 1, Dallas area. The MS run looked good but you have to have pledges and form teams, so that is out. What are others doing? Ft. Worth is a long drive for me. Spareribs
