Thanks for the comments. I also try and get by with as few Gu's as possible. However, my approach is not scientifically based. I don't know the exact needs of my body during a LR (never been tested). I sort of go by trial and error and what the experts say is "best practice". I do know I'm a 'sweater' (not the clothing type) ...get that from my mom's side ...so I'm very conscious of trying to take in plenty of liquids.

The interesting thing was that one of our local running 'gurus' (owns a store; lots of experience; coaches runners) told me he took 6 GU's during his recent BQ marathon. I was really surprised he took so many. Same with Lance. That's why I'm questioning my own use of GU's.

I'm going to try Gu with water over the next two weeks and see how it goes. Will let you know.

Re: Wed Apr 11 Boomer Runs

I frequently take Gu with me, but forget to use it. Or I forget my water (ala last Saturday's bonky 17 miler). I'm a forgetful runner. Good thing my feet are attached. But I also like training with minimal (stuff). Usually I just have my Garmin and that's about it. So far so good, but I can see the value of using this stuff and will try it this summer on long runs to see how I do with it.

Cloudy and chilly today, but so far the forecast snow and/or rain is holding off. That map was pretty wild... Hope things hold off till Monday night!!

What I'm trying to say -- sorry, I'm muddling here -- is minimal Gu's during training and one every 1/2 hr or so during marathon.  mc taught me this one.  It worked for him!

Nice Beer runs today!

6 miles in 45:02.  It was a nice change to be in long sleeves and shorts.  Although, more yucky weather on the way - mixture of rain & snow tonight and tomorrow morning and windy . . . I'd have to say I'm sick of the wind!

What's the deal with the strap extender?  Do you wear it on your upper arm?  That's the only thing I can think of.  Is it more comfortable on the upper arm or better at not dropping the satelite link?  Mine stinks when running in my town.  It seems to drop the satelite link too frequently.  Ooops, your near a tree, GPS signal lost . . .

Pink, I'd say, because it's so big, it's more comfortable on the arm.  Its positioning on the upper arm is better because your body isn't coming between the Garmin and the satellite.

I think it looks goofy on the arm, but until it conks out and I get a fancy wrist model, I'll stay with it. It has all the information I need.

Re: Wed Apr 11 Boomer Runs

Hi Boomers!  I let the tm coach me again, set the hr to 60% for 1 hour, did some upper body stuff.

Went to the dentist...dead tooth had to be drilled out. It was a bad one. I have all these devices in my mouth the doctor drilling for oil, blood squirting out all over the place, the doctor is also calmly explaining what he is doing along with various trivia, hollering to his assistant, we have a hot one! More shots, the radio playing in the background etc. all I could think about was BAB's thread where it went towards colonescomies, my reply was that "I was going to the dentist and that I would prefer that my teeth be examined from the front", I started laughing and the dentist had to stop while I got it back together, my thought went to "God I think I am getting a colonescomy thru my molar! This sucks!"

Will be doing my PTA run tonight, gonna be hard to control that one, but I will give it a good try. Good Runs All, Larry

Goofy stupid rain today so 4 miles on TM.

Larry, you had me spitting my water out with your trip to the dentist...especially since I sit here with a tooth issue and they want me to wait until next Wednesday to get in.

I think I may lie and tell them I am in agony, not just considerable discomfort. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/frown.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/frown.gif|border=0!

Re: Wed Apr 11 Boomer Runs

Drive by post tonight. The kids at the track killed the old man tonight. We did 400 pick-ups with 400 cool down between each total of 7 laps with each group X 3 groups. I always run the first hard lap with the front kids (pick-up at between 6 min mile and 6:40 mile pace, depending on the age grouop) then back off to the next group (pick-up at 6:30 to 7:00 pace and then for the last fast lap drop back again (pick-up at 6:30 to 7:15). Covered a total of 8 miles with warm up and cool down in a total of 1:03:35 and got in 9 speed laps. I will be sore tomorrow.

Good running,

Mike "GG" B

10 slow miles of recovery.  Felt stronger at the end than at the beginning.

The folks who ran outdoors all winter will have a distinct advantage on Monday.  It will be business-as-usual for them.

Doesn't this approach violate the "don't do anything new on race day" philosophy? I'd worry I'm setting myself up for some unpleasant surprise.

On the other hand, I generally use minimal gels and have wondered ifespecially at my pokey paceI might benefit from more in races.

On the other hand, every 1/2 hour?!  Senven gels for a 3:30

On the other hand, you can't argue with success.

(Hey, where'd that third hand come from?)

Re: Wed Apr 11 Boomer Runs

Good Wednesday evening,

A nice evening here, 60 degrees, 10-15mph NW wind. A loop around the lake for 8.2 miles @ 9:31/mile pace.

I hope the Boston weather forecast is wrong, but still wish I was there. One of these days, maybe my slowly increasing speed will intersect with my advancing age and I'll qualify. Theoretically, that could be in as few as 4 years!

Paul
