knee problems

When I would bike long distances my lower back would start to hurt. So I lower the gear and run a gear that has less resistance and problem is solved. But now I have another problem. I did this for like a couple of weeks. I did a 19miles, then a 38 miles, then a 45 mile bike rides. I did these bike rides 3 sundays in a row. When I was on the 45 mile one towards the end of the ride my left knee would hurt. But it is like the left part of the knee would hurt and it would hurt when it bent. I mean I could walk and it be fine. But it hurt mostly when I did the bending motion of the bike. I finished the bike but that muscle on the side of my knee would hurt. Now it still sorta hurts. But I really aggrivated it when I did a 70 mile bike ride. It hurts a little still but not as bad. Has this happen to anyone else?

Re: knee problems
Morrison; sounds like to are getting started on taking the longer rides. I would recommend seeing your local bike shop and get a fitting for your bike. This can make a big difference when you are doing the longer rides.
Need to be sure you are in good positions for your legs, back, and arms. I had a fitting done and gained 10+% in power during the session. Not to mention being in a better comfortable position.

Here is a link to a bike fitting and performance coach in the Southern California area. Even if you are not in area. It should give you some ideas of what you should look for when getting a fit done. Better yet send him an email.

Re: knee problems
Hey

I had the same issues and it took me awhile to figure it out. I changed my seat to a flatter seat so it wasn't always pushing me forward and I changed my peddles to a peddle that allows the foot to "Float". I now use look Keos. No more knee pain. Getting fitted on your bikes is also very important.

Good luck

Re: knee problems
Being properly fit on the bike is crucial. Those who suggested it are right on but to do so I'm convinced that you need to have a footbed or orthotic feature to the shoe to carry the loads you are stressing your legs. If the foot isn't secured the knee gives in. You are upping your mileage and something had to give and that something is your knee. Rotational cleats deal with the symptom and not the problem. Do a search for www.aline.com to see if there is a dealer near you. This is an excellent product that is customizable but can be ordered through Excel for example.
