Anyone here attempting/attempted to do 12 races in a year?
I've set a goal to run 12 races in 2012. So far I'm signed up for 6 races: four 5ks, one 10k trail race, and an 8k.
Looking to hear stories or those who have tried it and succeeded or looking to hear from those attempting this goal this year.
I do at least 24-30 races per year (sounds extreme, but I try to stay booked up every weekend). Some are just for fun and others are to support wonderful charity causes, but they also help to keep me focused on future training goals. My only bad experience was late October of last year (a Halloween, run-in-a-costume event). I ended up with a PW and and several injuries, but at least the post party was entertaining!

I had an off year last year as work got in the way of quite a few of the races I typically run.
I was still able to get into 22 races
3 Half Marathons
3 10 Mile
1 7.1 race
1 10 K
4 - 5 mile
8 - 5K's
Usually I run between 8-10 races a year. In 2011 I did 14 of them - there were just too many good ones to resist. All were road 5Ks and 10Ks, and I raced all of them. I don't use races as social runs - just my preference. Here's the rundown...
They were not evenly distributed through the year; some of them were 2 or 3 weeks apart, and then I might go 2 months before another set. That's just the way the schedule worked out.
I didn't plan them all at the start of 2011. Typically I'd plan them a couple of months in advance, and then actually sign up a week or two before the race (earlier if the race was about to sell out).

I did 7 races last year between April 30th and October 1st. I'll run the same trail/off road races again this year, but I'm looking for different road races this year.

I ran 14 races last year, started with a couple of 5ks, then ran like 5 straight 10ks, then ran a 10m and 15k, and finally towards the end of the year i ran couple half marathons.
I felt really good doing these races, this year i plan to run a little less than that mostly because i am running half marathons and marathons.
Prior to 2011, I ran about 14-16 races/year, mostly 10ks, 10 milers, and half marathons, and 25k. I prefer trail running events but sometimes I throw in a road race (ugh) because of my schedule/location/time.
Due to a knee injury from slipping on ice/snow on a trail and getting sick/recovered/then sick again Sept - Dec (exhaustion per MD), had to take time off so second part of 2011 was miserable for me but I managed to run 2 marathons (Jan and June) AND 5 HMs.
So 2012, I hope to resume my half marathon/month with 2 marathons somewhere in there .......... so far, ran HM in Jan., running a HM in two weeks, then thinking of running 2 HMs and a 10 miler in March to celebrate my birthday, YIPPEE ..........INSANE, I know!
Like crl8686, I don't register until a couple of weeks in advance and/or I know I will be available (due to business travels). I search for races months in advance and try to plan when to run my 2 per year marathons, and then train accordingly, using HMs to stay on top of my training schedule.......not bad for a soon-to-be 52 yr old!!
Thanks everyone! All your stories and successes and sharing has really given me some food for thought and confidence. This weekend is race #2 and I'm a mixture of nerves and excitement. I know I've gained in strength so I can't wait to see my finish time. I'm scheduled out to April for now. Just keeping my ear to the ground around me to find my future races.
I don't know how many races I will exactly run this year but I believe that I will do at least twelve. So far I have completed a 5k and a half marathon. Will run another half marathon in ten days, signed up for a 10k in March, signed up for Disneyland half Labor Day Sunday, and am planning to sign up for the Marine Corps Marathon in October. I plan to run at least three of six races in a local 5k series in the summer time - will be on travel for work for half of them. May do two other half marathons this year of events I ran last year, as well as a 10k 4th of July. So I think that brings me close to a dozen races. Good luck in your running, and especially in your races.

I feel that the goal of 12 races is good for me.
I had a goal last year to do a 5k each month, well I was not able to do that but did run in May, June, October and November. Whiel I continued to run several times a week I did not meet my goal.

Now I just need to fill in the holes with races and keep on running
