Hi everyone....ya'll are doing soooooo good!!!!  I'm doing a happy dance for you all.  And look, even some new ones!!!!  Congrats everybody!

I broke down yesterday and went to the doctor.  I am having an arthritis flare up in my leg....didn't know I had arthritis!  They believe it to be osteo.  I hope to get back to walking in a few days or maybe a week.  Exercise is good for arthritis....or so I'm told.  I should be able to get back to jogging/running once everything settles down.  I may stick with my treadmill for a while just because it's less impact on my joints.  I sure will miss running outside and feeling the eyes of neighbors gawking at me! haha.

I know I will be weeks behind everybody, but I did start in Feb and I'm sticking with this group.  Ya'll can just lead the way and I'll bring up the rear!!

I love reading your triumphs, keep posting!

    Run On!!!

    Re: February 2012 C25K Starters

Congratulations on the 20 minute run, HydeParkJogger! I love the name by the way, I wish I could run there. London's a bit of a drive for a daily run though. And good luck with yours' tomorrow flip. Sorry to hear about the arthritis, dd64, I hope you sort it and you're good to go run again soon!

I'm just about to head out for W4D2, in the boiling hot again. I'll update when I get back. Oh and one last thing, on my last "proper" run, my mouth began to get really, really dry and uncomfortable toward the end, was it the hot weather, dehydration or a combination of both? I did drink quite a bit before my run and am even taking a running bottle of water with me on my runs now, so I'm really confused. I hope it doesn't happen again today.

Edit: W4D2 completed earlier today, around half-noonish. It was even hotter today, and I'm almost certain it's the weather that is the problem, because I drank plenty of water before and during my run, yet my mouth dried up again and I started to feel quite sick toward the end of the run. But I pushed through and even managed to shave half a minute off of last week's pace, so it's all good!

Hope everyone elses' runs are going well, and to those of you coming up to it - smash those 20-minute runs!

    I DID IT!!!!!

The stars must have been lined up just right!  The morning was cool for a change, Pandora played all the right songs and I woke up just knowing I could.  W5D3?  Check!!!!  I am SO VERY GRATEFUL for everyone sharing their stories; they gave me the confidence to believe I could.  Flip, I felt like you after your last run -- I just couldn't stop smiling.  I totally get why runners raise their arms when they cross a finish line.  If I hadn't been on a quiet neighborhood trail, I think I would have yahooed!!!

Anyway, just wanted to let you all know that your stories are inspirational and shareworthy for a newbie like me!

    Re: February 2012 C25K Starters

Mama, congratulations on finishing Day 3!!  I know you are so proud!  I am doing mine tomorrow, so knowing you made it through yours lets me know there is hope for me!  I am so nervous!

Roses, I am so sorry you've been feeling bad on your runs.  As you may have read, my W5D1 was rough for me.  I was feeling just terrible at the end of my run.  I think sometimes we are just going to have off days and I feel like sometimes you might be able to work on pointing out something small you changed in your pre-run habits that made you feel that way.  I hope you figure it out!

DD, I'm so sorry about your injury!  I hope that everything heals up for you and that you can continue on your journey.  Please keep us up to date with your recovery and stick around with us to let us know when you get back to running!

Anyway, thank goodness for rest days...I have two tests today!  Yikes!  I'm anxious to see how my run goes tomorrow!

    Happy running everyone!

If this is a double post - sorry about that - I just hit a button and don't know what happened   I know just enough computer skills to be dangerous.

My background is:  I have run off & on for about 15 years - was running last year and injured myself and am now easing my way back into running again.   During my recovery - I was doing P90X with my husband - but it's not running.  Currently, I have arthritis in my left knee from an old running injury (and a Soleus cramp I got two weeks ago that lasted an entire week - which has finally resolved this past Monday).

dd64:  Don't let the arthritis diagnosis get you down!  My husband is a therapist and he also says that exercise is good for arthritis (use it or lose it).  I don't know if this will help you or not - but my knee always acts up and is stiff the first 3-5 minutes of a run then it's smooth sailing (which is why I am looking forward to tonight's run (W6D2) - after tonight - not more start/stop/start/stop training).  ?I hope you are back on track soon.

Some friendly advise for treadmill only runners.  If you are planning on running a 5k outdoors - I would suggest that you train at least some times outside.  Running outside is different in that you will encounter wind resistance, variations in terrain, different running surfaces and you will be propeling yourself forward (instead of the treadmill doing that for you).  I know that it is intimidating to run outside where folks can see you.  But hey - you are running!  No small feat.  If I get glances from folks - I just think to myself "I bet I can beat you in a race" and I pick up the pace just a little.  Can you tell I'm a little competitive?  I began running on a treadmill and then signed up for 5k without training outdoors.  The 5K had hills & a blazing sun.  I finished - but it was not a pleasant experience.  I just want everyone to be prepared and have as good a time for their 5k as possible.

Sharly:  I can identify.  I have long hair and it is usually in a ponytail under a hat.  I only braid it when it is raining and then it drives me nuts.  I also can't have anything around my waist or wear a jacket (way too hot).  I also can't drink or eat before a run.

I really enjoy everyone's posts - keeps me totally motivated.  Keep on running!

W6D1 done! I can't believe I've been running for five weeks. There was such a big energy barrier for getting started but now this feels like something I can keep up. Great programme!

The run was challenging but not too hard. I could probably push myself a little more in terms of pace because I'm still doing about 11 minute miles (woefully slow) but I think it's better that I keep enjoying myself and leave the training runs until I have a base.

The beautiful people were out this morning. The weather is good now so the people who normally stick to their personal gyms and private trainers seem to have emerged with their perfect bodies, perfect husbands/wives and perfect dogs running alongside. Very nice to watch... as they go flying past

Hey! Hope ya'll are having a good week.

I finished W5D1 a little bit ago. It went quite well once I got through the first segment. I was even able to push my pace a bit on the last jog. If my math and the odometer on my car are right, I'm covering about 3.25 mi on my outings. Which is really flooring now that I sit here and look at it in black and white.

I finally picked up some proper athletic clothes, so I'm not jogging around the neighborhood in my pajamas. I couldn't find any pants with a phone/.mp3 pocket, though.

MamaM, let the yahoos fly! You deserve it! If they get grumpy over a victory yahoo, just smile, wave, and walk off knowing you just rocked your workout. I know I've yelped a few times, and I'm lucky enough to have neighbors who are used to me and amused by my antics.

Sharly, in my high school years when I had long hair and had to be active (go BAND!), I'd do braided "Princess Leia" buns. But behind my ears, instead of over them. It worked really well, once I got the hang of securing them. I likely looked odd, but since I'm a huge Sci-fi nerd I thought I looked great!

Roses, how are you breathing? I have the same mouth dryness if I breathe through my mouth more than usual. Hydration may be a factor, as others have mentioned. I've found that the breath freshener strips are a quick-and-dirty way to alleviate the dry mouth. The cinnamon ones that Listerine had (have? I'm not sure if they still make them) were almost a guaranteed way to start drooling.

I   D I D    I T!!!!!  I ran the 20 minutes straight and I am so excited!!!!  I went running with my friend who is already a great runner and we had a great time!  We ended up doing 2.60 miles between the warm up and cooldown and the running, which I'm very happy with!  It was a lot of fun and I was so proud when I finished, we both put our arms in the air and cheered!  I was glad she was there because it didn't look so silly to be cheering together

Thank you all for the continued support....it felt really great to log in this morning knowing I was going to do the "big run" and see your encouragement!  This thread has been a great way to keep me motivated and share experiences with you all!  I hope everyone has a great end of their week!

    Happy running!

Mama, I feel so special you thought about me while cooking dinner!  Hehe!  It was a really wonderful feeling to accomplish that run.  I am looking forward to finishing the program, knowing now that I can do those long runs!  This weekend is a big weekend for me as well!  My parents are coming into town and my stepmom, sister, and one of my bridesmaids are joining me to search for my wedding dress!  I am getting married next May and am so excited to be working towards toning up and slimming down a little for the wedding!  I've already slimmed down a bit, so I am excited to try on those dresses tomorrow!  Anyway, I hope everyone has a great weekend and I will check back in on Sunday after W6D1!!!

    Happy running!

    February 2012 C25K Starters

First time to post, been lurking awhile.  Started C25K in mid-Feb, on W6D2 today.  Over 50, never been a runner.  Active most my life, walking mostly, horseback riding, cleaning stalls, carrying feed, yardwork, general every day task on a small acreage has been my physical activities.  Decided I needed more now that I'm "retired" from corporate America after 30 years.  Found the C25K app on my iPhone and decided I would give it a try.  I live in a neighborhood where houses are on 10+ acres located around a 1 1/2 mile circle loop so its a nice, paved road to walk/jog.  Does have hills and one in particular is pretty steep.  I've avoided jogging it during my workouts by either timing it right with the walking part or turning around and going the other direction.  This past Monday I decided to take it on during my 20-minute jog and I was successful!!  I looked around to see if anyone was watching me celebrate Rocky-style at the top of the hill and one lone zebra was watching (there are some exotic animals on a large ranch in our neighborhood).  So he/she and I celebrated together!

The breathing part has been the most difficult for me.  I try to slow down when it becomes very laborious  and also started doing some pilates on off days which is helping but any other tips would be helpful.  I timed my 20-minute run and I clocked 11.1 minute mile.  Hoping to make the 10-minute mark today.   If not I will keep trying next week.  I enjoy reading everyone's posts, keep up the good work!

Flip:  Congratulations!  It's great that you have a running partner - someone to keep you movitated and it makes the time pass so much more quickly.

Sharly:  Congratulations also!  I am right behind you.  I'm running W6D3 tonight or tomorrow morning.

Okientx:   Wish I had a Zebra cheering me on!  I am in rural Oregon and all I run into is dogs.

Everyone keep up the good work.  We can do this - look how far we have come already!
