What about a dog whistle as another option? Seems more humane, and safer for you and those around you. Pepper Spray is not too bad, like the kind they use to ward off bears. But like someone else, if it's windy....
Battons, sticks, bats, etc are less humane, but if it's self-defense, then you do what you gotta do.
Guns are a bad idea! If you're in that much trouble, then I highly doubt you'll be able to pull, aim the gun, and hit a moving target. More likely you will miss, and there's always the chance that you might hit somebody else (or yourself).
Doggy treats work well for most dogs. Chances are that a dog off-leash in a field is not as likely to be aggressive, unless it's got rabies, or is being territorial. It'll probably just come up to investigate you. And a treat or two will really help to build that bond, so the next time you see that dog, it's more likey to be friendly. Problem with this is that it might just end up following you for a long distance during your run!
