There is a 1pm start which is nice for driving down the day of, but odd for racing. No spectators on the course. VERY Hilly! Also, the roads were canted so hard on IT band issues if you have them. The police and Wm and Mary kids were great. No medal, just a plastic cup at the end. Would not do it again.
Forth time running this event. Like the rolling and challenging course. Best time for me this year. Water stops are not placed in good locations and again no gatorade or similar at the stations, just water and one gell station. Keep the gell and get some gatorade. No porta potties either. Sadly, i think my wife and I will look for another 1/2 marathon around this time next year. 3 stars mainly for the course.
I thought the course was outstanding - one of the most beautiful runs around. Hadn't run it in 6 years and forgot how hilly it is. Now for the bad: Terrible organization - took like 30 mins to get a shirt. No medals. No gatorade, etc. And - it's 24 hrs later and STILL no times posted. I mean - come ON! Get it together Tribe!
The course is challenging to say the least but very pretty. Very few spectators. Hill after hill and not very even in many spots. If you have IT issues, it is a killer. One of the main reasons we ran it this year is we are training for the Shamrock. Limited water, no gatorade. WM Students and volunteers were terrific. I'll probably run it again but only because I live 5 minutes away. If I came from out of town I'd be dissapointed.
I loved the course, hated the organization. 4 miles without a water stop between miles 2.5 and 6.5. No porta pottys whatsoever except at the start and just at the finish. I'll run this route again, not this race.
I grew up in the area and was familiar with the course, here are my thoughts:
1) Course map was not available prior to race day
2) 1pm time was nice
3) Hardly any spectators
4) about 5 water stops
5) Cones in the middle of the trail were annoying.
6) Only a long sleeve tech T and a plastic finisher's mug for the price. No finisher medal.
7) William and Mary volunteers were great.
8) Registration was confusing and not near the T-shirt line. No signs
9) Overall, would probably find another race, but a good challenging course.
I think this half was a joke!! One of the worst halfs I have ever run. The only good thing about the 1:00 start was that we had to drive 3 hours to this race, The half mile walk to the start was terrible, The packet pick was one of the worst I have ever seen,The shirts were terrible, and the plastic cups was the worst thing I have ever recieved at the end of a race. The course was very challenging, but the water stops were the worst I had ever seen, thank God it was not hot! The mulch on the trails was terrible! And the last mile, you could have gotton lost very easy, there were a few turns we did not know if we were right or not. Overall there was 8 of us from Lynchburg, and I dont think none of us will be back next year! The only highlight of the race was seeing one of us win it!
Fantastic event - enthusiastic runners, disappointing that there were not more bands and spectators along the route; well monitored, soggy mulch was a problem but that's a small thing, very interesting and varied scenery, marching in with the drum and fife corps was very nice. one o'clock start time requires some adjustments in normal race day routines, but that makes it interesting so why not.
I thought this was an outstanding course and a well-organized event. The web page could use some help--for us folks from out of town, it would be helpful to to provide more info on where/when to pick up the packet. However, I sent an email to the organizers, and they responded promptly with info. Very nice to have showers available for those of us with a long drive after the event. I thought the fife and drum escort to the start was a nice touch! I'll be back for this race.
CONSIDERING the small scale and low cost of this race, I am very satisfied!
Don't expect the race to be like the rock'n'roll or shamrock race, or you will certainly be disappointed. It is a small event yet still fun and challenging.
Scenic course, decent goodies, water stops placed in the right spots, good course markers and ample food/beverages at the finish line.
I only have two negatives:
-packet/bib pickup was not done in the same place.
-I think course maps should have been uploaded in advance. They could've uploaded it a few days in advance. That would still discourage pre-runs.
Results aren't posted on this website. It's posted under colonial half marathon and 5k here: http://thecolonialsports.com/events
Check in was very disorganized and the goody bag/prizes were pretty lame considering the cost of entry. And what's the holdup with posting the official results????
Third year running this race, always look forward to it. The drum and fife march at the beginning is a nice touch. Course is beautiful and challenging, the students and volunteers were great very enthusiastic. Organization was fine for a race of this size.
The course was a little disappointing. There were too many loops for a 5K race. Mile markers were not adequately visable. Registration pick up was confusing i.e packet pick up at one area and then t-shirt pick up at the other end. Would have been better to have everything at one station. Glad to have access to the locker rooms.
A very challenging and scenic course. Great job by the Tribe Club and William and Mary students. I love the area! Nice place for a Winter break and tune up for a Spring Marathon.
