what kind of mountain bike for a beginner?

Hi,

 

I am planning on buying a mountain bike soon. Budget will be between $500 and $700 for the bike. Any recommendations what to look out for? And what about 26 versus 29? Can anyone recommend the Marin Bolinas Ridge 29er Hardtail? It is the only one I have looked at so far, but haven't test driven it yet.
