What's wrong with my Hip?

I have a pain located on the side of my left hip that seemed to develop when I increased my running activity. Went to Doc #1. He took x-rays.....no fractures. Said it was a muscle pull. I rested it for several weeks. Didn't help. Went to Doc #2. He took x-rays also.....no fracture. Said I have hip bursitis most likely. Gave me cortisone meds and instructed me to do some exercises. Didn't help. In the meantime I did some research on the net. Hip bursitis is an inflamation of the bursa sac located on the side of the hip. The sac lies over the ball part of the ball and socket joint. If you move up the side of the hip about 5 inches, you get to the iliac crest. This is the bony part of your hip that is about where the top of your pants ride against. Love handles are right in this area. I don't think I have hip bursitis because the pain is not located at the point of the hip where the bursa sac lies. The pain is actually just below (maybe an inch) the iliac crest (top bony part of hip. Do you think I actually have hip bursitis or is it some other injury? Do you have any suggestions as to what exactly is this injury?? Has anyone else experienced this? If so, I'd like to hear your story.

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
First, if you haven't posted this in the med tent forum.....do it now. There also is probably another topic or two in there from similar people.

Second, i have had problems with my hips and knees. The thing that helped me so much was going to a chiropractor. Also, make sure you stretch the area, and try to find some strengthening exercises.

Good luck

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
I had the same issue with my hip a few years ago-- soccer, and unfortunatly it's currently been affecting my running. I had an over-use injury, and the doctor prescribed that I rest it along with trips to phsycal therapy, which actually really helped, but occasionally I feel pains. Now that I've been training daily (for 5ks in the summer/fall) it's come back.

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
How long have you been doing the PT? I had hip bursitis and it hurt like the dickens just like you described. What helped me was doing the PT and really concentrating on strengthening my core. I was creating the issue by rotating my hips during my runs. This happened a few years ago. Been ok for 2 years now. It is not a fast process!

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
After I got a catscan of my hip, the doctor said that it was an overuse injury, but i had had osgood slaughter disease in my knee (on the same leg)--so that may have had something to do with the hip problems. For a while I just ran through the pain, thinking it was just temporary until i went to the doctor, but the PT helped a lot. I didn't do any weight lifting, just a lot on a stationary bike.

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
I had the exact same problem this track season.

For me, it wasn't an overuse injury... during training one day one of my teammates jumped on my back while i was running and caused me to fall. The first result was a bad knee, (which fixed itself in a few days), but I also noticed my hip starting to hurt in a really strange place (the lilac crest).

I figured that it would just go away, so I kept running despite the pain. I felt that I couldnt take any time off because it was only a few weeks before the competition season. So, even though I was literally limping through our distance runs.. I kept going. Big mistake. Even though I managed to run though the pain and win the 3k and 1500 at both our city and regional meets, it resulted in a really poor showing at provincials. (... 1:20 slower than my PB in the 3k)

Anyway, I took a month off after provincials (well, 2 and a half weeks) and started going to physio. I found out that it is somehow and abdominal strain.. even though I have no idea it is in the part... I've been having ultrasound by the physio guy, and doing ab exercises. I started running again, and although there is still a little irritation after I stop, the problem has for the most part gone away.

I found that taking time off really helped. Do it now while its the off season and before xc season starts.

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
I hurt my hip polevaulting. It felt something like what you described. Is the pain more on the outside of your hip? If not look into hip flexor injuries.

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
Could it possibly be your IT Band?? a couple months ago i had to take a while off from running because of IT band syndrome....overuse injury...it's on the side of your leg and connects to the hip and knee.
I'm not sure if this is what's wrong with you or not, but i tried everything...chiropractor, x-rays, MRI's...nothing helped until I went to Physical Therapy, then it got better within a couple weeks!

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?
Have you checked your shoes out? I had that same problem during track season. I changed my trainers to ones with more cushion, and haven't had any trouble since.

Re: What's wrong with my Hip?

Jcoulter,

Did you ever resolve this? Sounds exactly like what I'm experiencing now. Been to the chiro, sports massage which make it a little better till I run the next time then it comes back full fury. I was wondering about the attachment points themselves at the iliac crest. The anterior third of the iliac crest is where my pain is concentrated. I've been stretching, which makes it much better for a little while, but even sitting for 30 minutes after that, the area tightens right back up. A couple of days after running it begins to subside. Hard cycling for an hour and half doesn't seem to set it off, so far just the running.

Hope you had some success with yours, the frustration is exasperating.

Thanks.
