They have to make money somehow by offering race registration.  If they didn't show the charge it would probably just be added to the cost of signing up for the race.  The nice thing is many of the smaller races still let you print out registration and mail it in with a check via snail mail.  At this point, paying a fee for online registration is just part of the deal.
