Ok, so I'm at about mile 55 on a metric centruy a few weeks ago and I get some twinginess in my left knee. I take a few days off and all is good. Since then I put in about 180 miles, mostly easy, and no worries.
This morning, I am on vacation in Destin, Florida, I clip in for a spin class at a health club, and the same twinginess comes back (it's been five days since I have been on a bike of any kind), but this time it gets progressively worse....I would unclip, stretch, massage, etc., re-clip and start spinning again. During the class, I realize it is the most intense when I am spinning really fast, and when I add resistance, it isn't so bad....sound familiar???....anybody know what might be going on? It feels like it is below the patella on the inside and it is either pretty uncomfortable, or one time, it just SCREAMED at me, so I got off and quit spinning. Thought I had it licked, but obviously I didn't.
I have had a simular problem. It turned out to be rotation of my knee at the top of the pedal stroke. Putting shims on the shoe elimiated the problem. I'd suggest you find a really good bike fitter and have them take a look at what's going on during your stroke...
I may have figured it out. On the road, I use spd-a and most spincyclesuse spd. So, I put a pair of spd cleats on my road shoes before I went on vacation. The idea about shims got me thinking about the position of my foot on the pedal, and I thought.....duh, try moving the cleat a bit on the side that was giving me trouble. I moved it back no more than 1/16th of an inch, and voila, I could spin without pain. I don't know how this relates to the same pain I felt on the metric if at all (I have the mileage and an appropriate build-up behind me), but I haven't felt it since on the bike, so I think they are unrelated and are coincidental. Thanks for the suggestions, I just wanted to follow up.
I experience the same type of pain. I first got it pretty bad last year during the MS150 ride. I just thought it was because I was new to the sport and pushed too hard to keep up with the guys without a decent base. I get it occasionally still, but mostly on colder days. So...I have two questions:
1) Being that I am new to cycling, is it best that I re-visit a bike fitter or is it really as simple as adjusting the cleat myself?
2) I played basketball in college, so I am very protective of my knees. Do I need to worry about any damage to my knee or just pay attention to it without obsessing and move on?
Amy, I hope you had a great time in Destin...I did...the weather was great. I only saw minor damage remaining from Ivan and the place where I stayed was completely rebuilt and even nicer than before.
1) I think it's always a good idea to have a bike fitter look at how you sit on the bike.......me? I like to try things myself, learn the hard way and ask when I am stumped. That was my experience with the spin class last week.
2) Since you played ball, you probably know how to listen to the pain, but you probably don't have the benefit of a trainer anymore, so advice doesn't come as readily as you are used to getting it. I think these message boards with a grain of salt are good along with riding regularly with a club and relying on their expertise helps. If you have a sports med doc, running stuff by that person is always good, but if you have no pain now, a special trip probably isn't necessary.
btw....I was messing around with my pedals and put my mtn spd pedals on my road bike and left the spd cleats on my shoes and it seems like I am getting more power transfer than with the spd-a. My avg speed is up 1.5 mph to around 19.5....blew me away.....I don't really have any more fitness than before, so I may make a trip to the shop to have a fitter re-look at my road pedals and how I fit the bike now.
