I have an 8 mile race coming up and it's all downhill. starting 2,200 feet up and steady steep incline all the way down. I have no place to really train that is that high up and all downhill...any advice on methods to train for this race??
You probably don't need a long downhill for training. A good rolling course where you can emphasize the downhill sections should help. Another possibility is doing downhill repeats on a hill that is maybe a quarter-mile long. Run the downhill at pace then go back up at a somewhat easier pace. You need to strengthen your quads to stand up to the downhill stress. At the same time you want the hamstrings strong enough to maintain balance with the quads.
