Los Angeles, CA – 05/31/2013—Studies have shownthat people tend to overeat after a vigorous workout. The thinking is thatenough calories have been expended to justify the eating. A thought by many isthat harder runs help the metabolism stay more revved up after the run. But anew study reminds people that a hard run isn’t necessarily a free for all toeat everything in sight.
In the study 18 women did four 30 minutesessions on the treadmill. The workouts varied in intensity from low to moderateto vigorous. Following the workouts the women were asked to estimate how manycalories were burned during each. Each woman overestimated the calorieexpenditure for the hardest workout by 18%.
"The ability to accurately estimate caloricexpenditure seems to be compromised when engaging in vigorous exercise,"the researchers who conducted the study concluded. "This mismatch couldhave deleterious effects on weight management over the long term."
Many runners however, have no appetite rightafter a hard run. To ensure this weight-loss damaging scenario does not takeplace, take in a small amount of calories after a hard workout or run, whichwill help speed up workout recovery.
