Deer 1, Car 0

I got broad sided by a deer on the way home last night. Less then a mile from home, I got a big jolt. I thought I blew a tire at first. The car is not pulling. I look in the rear view mirror and see the deer getting up and running off. I pull over and check the car. My back driver's side door is smashed in. Deer hair in the handle. Door works; but, I didn't try the window.

Now I am out a deductible and the PITA repair work.

Yikes! I'm glad you are ok, that's for sure! That's one of my worst nightmares, living where I do. I see them so often, sometimes frighteningly close, but "it" hasn't happened yet...finding wood to knock upon...Sorry to hear about your car and the needed repairs. That can get expensive.

Glad your ok too, sucks about the car though. I actually am just waiting for a deer to run into me cycling by myself, or worse yet in a big group riding in a fast pace line....with allll the deer I see, it's a real possibility.

Good luck getting your car fixed...I actually manage a collision center, and deal with deer hits all the time.

Deer ride in pace lines? Huh, I'd think antlers would be at least as unsafe as aerobars.

Bummer about the repair job, Tribob!

We hit 4 deer in 3 months a couple of years ago. I hit 1 and my husband hit 3. Two of those were hit in the same evening. You think the man would have learned to slow down after the first one!

You weren't near Birmingham township were you? I'm pretty protective of my new herd, including Buck Johnson and his wife and two kids.

Sorry to hear about it, I know it's just almost inevitable around here. I'm glad you weren't hurt. (and that the deer was able to flee the scene).

Never heard about them hitting cyclists, but a runner was felled by a deer several years ago during a local 10K race.

Glad you're okay! I flipped a truck once trying to avoid a deer. Didn't hit the deer, but totalled the truck and nearly totalled myself.

****, sorry to hear TriBob. Glad that at least YOU are okay. I fear hitting a dear. A few months ago while on a training ride with my Tri club, I almost hit a deer... on my bike. No kidding. I was out ahead hammering away when this deer jumped out and gave me the deer in the aerobars look. Thankfully it scampered away.

Had the same thing happen to me a couple of years back. Now when I go out for a meal I always check the menu for venison working on the theory get eat them before they get you.

Did the London Duathlon last Sunday in Richmond Park, London and a deer jumped the road in front of the cyclist in front of me. Its feet were level with his head and at the time we were doing just under 40 mph down hill. I never realised they could jump so far and so high.

Re: Deer 1, Car 0
Bob, that's a bummer about the car. On the way home from the lake Sunday we hit a cat and it really upset DW so she had to explain to DD3 what happened. DD3 was really worried about DW. Now DD3 has been going around all week talking about how we hit a kitty with the car. I couldn't feel more like cr@p. I can't imagine what I would do if we hit a deer or a moose (or it hit us) and someone got hurt. I am glad no one was hurt in your case. Doors can be fixed.

Re: Deer 1, Car 0
I was out for a night MTB ride a few years back on the opening day of gun season and as I was driving home I saw one of my roadie pals walking on the side of this dark highway.

I drove back and found that he had been out riding his cyclocross bike down this hill at about 40 mph with just a little headlight and had plowed right into a deer, breaking his bike in half and fracturing his ankle, plus he had a concussion.

He said after he crashed, he was just laying in the road and a car almost ran him over, oof.

Glad that you were ok. It could be much worse.... I ran into a deer several months ago early early in the AM. I was able to stop but not completely avoid hitting her. Took a while to get it over with.

Re: Deer 1, Car 0
That was awfully rude of the deer not to stop and give his insurance information.
