Reduce Cravings for Sweets Naturally

America as a whole isa nation addicted to sugars.  Found ineverything from candies to cereal, and soda to high-fructose corn syrup filleddrinks, these simple sugars contribute greatly to the rising obesityepidemic.  But with our increasingly busylifestyles, and lack of exercise, the body craves these types of sugars forenergy to perform simple functions.  Howcan this habitual craving for simple, unhealthy starches be changed into somethinghealthier?  Below are some naturalsuggestions for curing a sweet tooth.


One of the quickestways to combat cravings for sugary treats is to ensure a person is adequatelyhydrated.  Dehydration decreases physicaland mental performance, leading to the body craving additional sources ofenergy to compensate for the decline in function.  Even as little as a 5 percent reduction inhydration levels can reduce mental and physical function by up to 30 percent.  Before reaching for the candy bar, try reachingfor a tall glass of water to see if it assists in perking up mentalperformance.


Swapping out sweettreats for other sweet tasting items is another way to combat cravings forsugar.  A few to consider are switchingout whole fruit instead of consuming a glass of fruit juice, exchanging thewhite bread on a sandwich for wheat bread or pita bread to lower consumption ofsimple carbohydrates.  Other switches canbe oatmeal for traditional cereals, or sourdough bread for toast witheggs.  These switches will provide morecomplex carbohydrates that will provide the body with a longer source of energyover a sugary snack.


Another important toolin combating sugar cravings is to ensure the body is sufficiently fueledthroughout the day by consuming enough calories for a person’s activitylevel.  Each meal and snack shouldconsist of a source of protein to keep the body full longer, and a carbohydrateto provide energy.  Also included shouldbe some snacks of various vegetables. Vary the preparation, or add low-fat dip for extra flavor if vegetablesare hard to palate.


Simple changes willultimately lead to less consumption of simple sugars, increasing health andassisting in decreasing weight at the same time.
