Mental Health Should be a Focus for Employers and Employees

The importance of mental well-being has beenhighlighted in recent years, and now a representative of the Duke UniversitySchool of Medicine has spoken out about how important it is to take care of ourminds in addition to our bodies.

“Our mind is very closely tied into ourbody.  Mental health affects every aspectof our physical health.  Mental beingshould be the number one priority, because there’s no health without mentalhealth,” advised Murali Doraiswamy of Duke University.  He advised companies should be focusing moreon the well-being of their employees as this can lead to improved performance andultimately, a stronger business. 

As mental well-being is tied so closely withphysical well-being, it’s important that companies respect their employeesneeds for time outside of work to engage in physical activity or engage insocial activities.  This will not onlyhelp produce healthier, more engaged employees, but can reduce the money spenton insurance as well.

Employees who are healthy both mentally andphysically are also less likely to become ill and come to work sick, or misstime to deal with illnesses. 

Doraiswamy also pointed out that the ultimategoal of businesses is to provide happiness and satisfaction to theircustomers.  Why not provide the same totheir employees?  If businesses trulywant to succeed, they need to provide health and wellness benefits to all theiremployees to build a strong foundation to stand on.
