One Exercise Session Can Change The Body

To get the full benefits ofexercise, including extended life, protection from disease, weight loss, andimproved sleep, it needs to be done on a regular basis.  But this isn’t to say that engaging in someexercise, even one session, doesn’t offer a few instantaneous rewards.  While the recommendations are to engage in atleast 2-2 ½ hours of exercise per week, even one session of moderate-intensityaerobic activity has numerous benefits for the body and mind.

Swedish researchers released astudy in 2012 that indicated a few minutes of exercise in healthy yet inactiveadults alterted the genetic material in their muscle cells.  The brief period of exercise seemed to turnon certain genes that increased strength and metabolism.  This was after one session ofmoderate-intensity activity, imagine the benefits of a life-long exerciseprogram.

In addition to turning on certaingenes in the brain that offer physical benefits, one session of exercise alsotriggers endorphins to increase mood and raises serotonin levels to improvemental well-being.  The increase of theseneurotransmitters can fight poor moods, stress, and make a person feel morerelaxed and eager to engage in more of the same activity.

In addition to this lifted mood,a person may also feel a lift in energy and alertness.  Increased oxygen provides stimulation to thebrain and can leave a person feeling more alert and focused afterward.  This is another reason why many healthexperts are suggesting that employers allow employees time during the workdayto engage in physical activity.  Itincreases overall employee satisifaction and productivity in just a few shortminutes.

These short-term benefits ofexercise should be enough to stimulate interest in a program, but imagine thelong-term benefits and how the body can change physically and mentally justthrough a daily walk or jog.  It’s yetanother reason why physical fitness is linked to both mental and biophysicalhealth.
