Weight Loss Pace Determines Success

Los Angeles, CA – 3/5/2014

Whentrying to lose weight, many of us are tempted to go straight to thecrash-dieting approach to combat impatience and accomplish goals at the sametime.  Unfortunately, impatience is oneof the worst personality traits we have when it comes to weight lossgoals.  Immediate results don’t alwaysequal long term success, and if we are to succeed in losing the weight we wish,we need to find a way to control impatience and develop sustainable habits forweight control.

Considerthis – if the body is used to consuming 2,000 calories per day, and thensuddenly intake drops by 800-1000 calories per day, it’s bound to shed weightas a result.  In addition to this, personstrying to lose weight are also likely to become more active, meaning theirburning additional calories and not replacing these for energy.  While this can provide short term success, inthe long run it doesn’t even out.

In orderto effectively manage metabolism and lose weight, we need to take the body to astate of homeostasis and balance while reducing calorie intake and increasingactivity.  In order to accomplish this, agradual reduction in calories is necessary rather than a huge reduction.  15 percent is a good place to start and watchhow the scale changes.  If there is aplateau, this means we’ve found the maintenance place and we can reduce fromthere.

While itmay seem tedious to take weight loss slowly, we need to compare choices: is itbetter to lose 1 pound a week for 50 weeks and keep the weight off, or lose 10pounds right away, 5 more over the next few weeks, then plateau and eventuallygive up all together?

Whileimmediate weight loss can feel like a success, it can eventually lead to areversion into old habits when plateaus are reached.  Slow and steady truly wins the race, and inorder to accomplish that many need to eat more and exercise the same to reachtheir weight loss goals.
