Why did the search directory change on Coolrunning? Did I miss an email telling us this was going to happen? It isn't very easy to navigate.
I agree, I think the new navigation is very user UNfriendly - I really liked the old search by state. The new one is hard to find and it took me some time to even locate the event search... don't know why they changed it, but I don't like it either. I am hoping if enough people complain, maybe they will put it back.
Agreed! The new search is unuseable. I wanted to see if I could find a race in August in NH and as poor as the filters are to begin with, they reset when I went to get to the next page so I end up getting races this weekend in AZ. WEAK. This was a great way to find races, if they can't radically improve it or just switch back I will stop bothering with this site because it's such a bad system.
Agreed. I used the by state search constantly. Please bring it back.
Maybe they wanted to set a new world record for going from first to worst.
The best running resource (at least for New England) to completely useless.
In less than one day!
Seriously, though, this is the worst thing to happen to online athletics access since Dyestat was bought and immediately trashed by _____.
Upon further review it is clear that the answer is $$. Active.com must have made them an offer they couldn't refuse to stop listing upcoming races (drawing away their internet traffic). I'm guessing the race results will disappear shortly also. Print up anything you want to keep.
So where can we get lists of upcoming races now?
Agreed. I can't figure out how to search by location. The new functionality is useless. Any suggestions for other online race calendars?
I remember reading somewhere awhile ago that active.com bought Coolrunning. If they change the results section that will be the end of Coolrunning.
I did some searching and found this website that seems to have an easy to navigate "search by state" option. From what I'm reading and from my own personal use of Cool Running, this is how MOST people search for races in their area.
I was able to look up my state and see quite a few races listed, so I think this might be my new bookmark for finding races.
So see ya Cool Running... too bad you had to make changes for the worst
I'm glad to see others are talking about this...I thought it was just me. Like others I am finding it impossible to find a decent, comprehensive list of races by state through the new active.com search feature. Even once I do set all the parameters correctly the list winds up being very incomplete...I am running in three races this month that aren't even listed as an option. I wonder how many decent races I'll miss as a result of this "new feature."
I checked out runningintheusa.com...it appears as though that will be my new go-to site as well.
One of main reasons for going to coolrunning along with race results was to find a friggin' race now it's impossible to find anything unless I'm looking for a 5k in Tempe Arizona.
Send Coolrunning an email through the feedback section complaining about the search directory. It will probably be the only way to get it changed back. I also checked out www.runningintheusa.com and will recommend it to my running club.
This is awful. One of the worst search engines I've ever seen.
A few years ago when this site was privately owned, there were literally thousands of runners coming here. When it became "Active" and part of the corporate world, the new owners changed the forum's software and totally screwed things up, triggering a mass exodus out of here.
Active was recently sold again and it appears the new owners are fixing things that aren't broken again. Here's another vote for "runningintheusa.com, if Active listens to its members this time, it'll be a first...
Enjoy life, this ain't a rehearsal...
I agree that the "upgrade" to the calendar feature has totally ruined the utility of this (previously) valuable aspect of coolrunning. I mourn the loss of this resource, as it was always my first stop at finding potential road races for any upcoming competitive season. I also used to be a regular user of this site's training log (and was a big fan of the shoe-tracker feature) and was sad to see that facet get trashed into uselessness a couple of years ago.
In addition to the running in the USA calendar, the event calendar section of the New England Runner page (http://www.nerunner.com/ME2/Default.asp) is a decent listing of races in the North East USA (if that's where you happen to be). National and sectional USATF sites are also good resources, and if you, like me, like to throw your lot into collegite track meets that allow "open/unattached" runners to join appropriate heats, the Direct Athletics webstie (http://www.directathletics.com/) is a nice option as well.
So long, coolrunning. You were a great, great friend to this runner who has struggled through a number of "comebacks" over the years. You will be missed!
