My mile time that I posted is not a race but a 1 mile course (it's a loop), no grade to speak of and I just run it as fast as I can like two weeks before my marathon. I've found that I can add 1 minute to this mile time and use that as my goal pace for the marathon. I figure the elites are running 5 minute miles for the marathon and I also figure that they can run 4 minute miles, so if it's good for them it must be good for me too!

Mine was an official race on the track. I don't think I could run nearly
as fast without the race environment.

Re: Poll: Marathoners mile times.

Mile: 6:17.0 (7/06)
Marathon: 3:37:18 (10/07)

Mile: 5:58 (7/07)
Now aiming for a 3:20ish marathon in 10/07

The mile race in 06 was done while I was training for the marathon.  I also did a speed work group 1x per week for 6 weeks in prep for the mile.

I wonder how good this is as a predictor workout compared to other predictor workouts like Yasso 800's, assuming you have trained specifically for the marathon and not trained to do the workout of course

Best mile (not a race): 5:45
Marathon (race) 2:57 6:45 pace

Remember, of course, that the elites are adding 25% to their mile pace.  The same percentage would mean that an 8:00 miler would do a marathon at 10:00 pace.  For most of us, adding one minute to the best mile pace to get marathon pace makes for a pretty agressive goal.
