Worst type of weather to run in?

The other post about running in the rain got me thinking.

What's the worst type of weather to run in?

Heat? Rain? Snow? Wind?

For me, the worst would be running in a cold and gusty day.  Something about wind and the cold (not to mentioned chapped skin) makes running almost unbearable.

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

I'll run in cold, or wind, but not both together. And not hot and humid, either.  Luckily I live in the west where it's never humid.

I guess the worst weather would be VERY anything. Like very hot, very cold, very windy, etc. But everyone will have their own version of what their limits are. "Too hot" for me is about 75! Too windy is maybe 25 mph when it's warm and 10 mph when its cold, and too cold is below about 10F.

freezing rain where you've got water on top the black ice (0 traction)

I run in Alaska so heat is seldom an issue (at least where I am, farther inland it can be), and rain, snow, and wind (as long as less than 50mph - stronger and there's falling trees and airborne debris) are just part of the game.

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

Very cold, very windy, very rainy.  We had our conference meet last year in 36 degrees, heavy rain, and 50mph gusts of wind.  It was horrible.  I didn't help my cause by wearing nothing but my uniform.

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

For me the worst are changing conditions.  My most uncomfortable run was one that started out at 35 and overcast, but changed to rain, then freezing rain, then driving sleet and snow.  I wasn't dressed for the cold and wet.  If it had started out freezing and raining and snowing, I would have dressed for it and been fine, but I got caught by surprise.

Anything w/ ice and bad footing is the worst.  Anything else is runnable.

The least enjoyable for me is anywhere around 35* and raining.

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

Nope, sorry, can't find any type of weather that's not good to run in, assuming you're being smart about it (properly dressed, hydrated etc.). Like most here, there are many reasons why I run. Some weather is condusive to good performance (upper 40s, clear, 5 mph wind) and some weather presents more of a challenge. Meeting those challenges make us strong. Probably the most difficult running weather I've dealt with is low single digit temps, several inches of snow and wind. When I finished my run and cracked the ice out of my hair, I felt like a STUD! While the run kinda sucked in its own way, it was worth it just to feel like I was more hard core than I really am.

Either HEAT or melted, refrozen snow.  I ran last year in the "couple day old frozen" snow and the ground was SO uneven that my legs hurt.  Running in fresh snow it good.

Any run where there is lightening in the area. Some other conditions may be hazardous as well (very hot, for example), but they're usually hazards you can prepare for and prevent.

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

I love running in the snow.  I don't mind the heat.

No matter how smart I dress or how much I spent on my tech gear, it's not as enjoyable at 35-39 degrees with a wind driven rain or sleet.

For those of you who don't like running in slushy snow - I recommmend gore-tex running shoes and gaiters. Works for me to keep my tootsies dry.

Cheers-

Lightning.

An F-5 tornado 1 mile to your SW moving NE would be pretty bad as well.

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

I lived almost all my life in Denver and so I have run in slippery winter conditions.......that is probably my least favorite weather to run in.  However, now I live in Phoenix and I only run early in the AM during the summer when it is somewhat palatable for a run.  BUT, it amazes me the IDIOTS I see running here in the summer heat of the day.......crazy, just crazy!!!

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

While I'm more motivated to run in extreme heat, I've noticed that I tend to run slower on such days as compared to extreme cold.  It seems to be A LOT harder to get myself out the door on the colder days, but as long as my hands don't get too cold, I'm usually able to keep going.

Last winter (my first winter in Denver) was pretty brutal.  I hated running on areas that were slippery, as well as thickly crusted deep snow.  There was a few runs that I came back with bloody shins due to the "postholing" through the crusty layer.

Re: Worst type of weather to run in?

When the conditions get extreme in any direction I will eventually get to my limit.

I agree about the underfoot conditons.

Nobody yet mentioned lack of light. I remember once setting off before light to run a new trail along a rugged and occasionally boggy costal route. Crags, bogs, brambles, all in the dark. When day arrived I was not a pretty sight.

I could have been thankful that there were not 40 degrees of frost and 80 knot winds. !http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/wink.gif|src=http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/wink.gif|border=0!
