Add one more problem to the list - a dangling cord caught the arm of another runner slowing down a whole pack behind them as they untangled.

No injuries and no big physical pileup, but it still hurts the focus if you are trying to do well, to have to slow down and alter your pace or path  unnecessarily because of a headphone wearer.  Our club competition is based on age-graded results, so a runner who is over 50 or 60 and midpack or slower where the headphone problems are the worst, may be in heated competition with runners in their 20s and 30s who run in a realtively headphone-free zone. There are times when losing even 2-3 seconds can mean losing the race or position in age group or age-graded competition.

I'm sorry, but if I saw that I'd be laughing my butt off!  A dangling cord caught another runner...LOL.  Sounds like these runners should stay indoors so as not to harm others!

I was at a race this weekend and a horse got loose and ended up getting caught in a runners IPOD cord. The runner was OK but the horse had to be put out of its misery. To make matters worse, the IPOD runners couldn't hear the horse ambulance.

    A terrible tragedy.

Or maybe headphone wearers should have their own separate starting time after everyone else and/or maybe be forced to wear big flashing lights that warn others to stay far far away - like they have for some of those driver's ed cars.  I have to admit I thought I had seen all the problems that headphone wearers could cause, but a dangling cord as a lassoo for another runner's arm was a first for me!

I haven't read all of this stuff yet, and may not at all, but the great thing about these silly IPODs is that the users will mostly be deaf prematurely from listening to the damn things too loudly while running, thus damaging their ears due to increased bloodflow, etc. caused by the running itself......then they won't need them anymore since they'll be deaf....

Also, if you're running anywhere around moving traffic with these things stuffed in your ears, better be ready for a trip to the hospital if you aren't really careful....drunk and/or distracted drivers can be hard to avoid when they're coming up from behind you and you're as oblivious as they are due to music.....

I'm not a regular here, and I have not read the other iPod threads, but I'd like to post an observation. The original poster may not have been as tactful as he could have been in expressing his opinion concerning iPods, MP3, etc. But a lot of you who disagreed were equally tactless in your criticism and "witty" rejoinders; comfortable in your companionship with the "wiser" majority.

Maybe he has a point. Perhaps we should try disassociating ourselves from the self-imposed noise that we feel we must have. Maybe we need to fall in love again with the music of nature, the rythm of our breathing. How can our conscience, our inner selves, chi, the Spirit, Holy Ghost or whatever talk to us if we don't seek for the quiet, reflective moments and just...listen?

I love to run, but I also enjoy the association of other runners. Many iPod users pass by without a wave or friendly gesture. They might as well had been in a car with the windows rolled up. There is nothing wrong with iPods, I'm just saying that I personally miss the days when people talked more instead of being self-absorbed in their own little digital worlds.
