October Boomer Healthy Eating Thread

This thread is where we shoot the breeze about healthy eating, eating to lose weight or run/swim/bike better or get our healthy numbers healthier.
Thanks to Lynne for keeping this going and since it's the 5th and she's MIA I decided to start.

Re: October Boomer Healthy Eating Thread
Barb, Thanks for starting us off this month.

My weight is about the same as when I last posted but since I have added some cross training to my regimen I feel like I am running stronger . . . just hope this translates into faster.

We are going on a mini vacation since I have Columbus day off. Going to Bethany Beach Delaware, just my DH and myself with SIL & BIL staying over on Sunday night. I plan to eat healthier this time, indulge some but not go overboard . . . I'll let you know how that goes.

The Back on My Feet program is going well, the guys are running 4 days a week with a long run of 10 miles. A number of them are running a 1/2 on 11/18 . . . they are all excited about that. We have also started up at another shelter and expect to add a third before the end of the year . . . so we will need a few more volunteers. Check out the website at http://backonmyfeet.org/main/index.html[/URL" target="_blank"> if you click on About Us and then Volunteers you can see a photo of some of the volunteers including me.

Re: October Boomer Healthy Eating Thread
that sounds like a wonderful program mr. pat!

thanks for starting us off, barb.

i am pleased to report 3 lbs are gone since i started on track (on the wagon?) a couple of weeks ago, and i now weigh what i did during most of the summer, though not the minimum. i've been able to continue since DH returned from the mountains, and he is enjoying the soups i've been making. (i think he's also enjoying the fact that i'm sharing some of the cooking again .)

i'm not sure what my goal for the month is, but i want to continue tracking my food on fitday.com because that really seems to keep me... on track - if you have to write it down, it makes a difference. i've only been eating around the 1200 calorie range, and that worries me a bit that it might be too low and slow the metabolism, but it could just be that as a small person (5'2") i just don't need so many calories. i also like adding the miles there and seeing the activity calories greater than the food calories.

i would like to add some cross training (core?) exercises, but i seem to have a hard time getting from thought... to action.

is there someplace that the recipes from last month (and perhaps previous months?) went, or should i hurry and copy them down?

Three goals this month -

Organizing the Sept recipes as they are healthy and delicious

Setting up a healthy grocery list and buying groceries once a week - one cannot eat healthy food if it isn't in the house

fjordrunner - I too would like to add some core exercises

Re: October Boomer Healthy Eating Thread
hello, la T,
i am also trying to plan meals more (i used to when the kitchen was my responsibility), and i printed up the shopping list from the soup diet (which is not just soup) and have been adding to it each time. we are definitely going to the store less frequently in this time, though i still haven't figured out the quantities yet.

i've made a folder where i'm keeping shopping lists, meal plans, and recipes on the computer. maybe it will help

Lynne, hope all is well. Barb, thanks for doing yet one more thing for all of us! Happy October Eating everyone.

I'll write more later, but I just wanted to remind everyone that it's almost time to plant garlic. I ordered two new varieties this year. Barb, I'll put a row in for you.

Re: October Boomer Healthy Eating Thread
Although it was (unfortunately) too hot in some places today, here is MA, things seemed to cool off. Having grown up in CA, I am still unaccustomed to the beginning of autumn. It makes me a bit uneasy, knowing that colder weather is ahead, so I (along with many others) pull out a few warm sweaters and make some soup.

Autumn Soup
Oven roasted vegetables - onion, squash and parsnips
Puree the cooked veggies with broth and yogurt
Add curry powder, cumin and a dash or cayenne pepper

El Senor looked at the pot of soup and declared "it must be fall"

Re: October Boomer Healthy Eating Thread
Thanks, Hally! I'd been wondering what happened to this thread... just now found it. I am struggling... I'm up 10 pounds from a year ago. This is ridiculous. I've been really trying hard to think what I used to do, but it's not much help because I think I've always eaten like a horse... Running used to help keep it off, but the reduced running the last couple of months must also be a contributing factor. I'm running more marathons than ever (3 in 7 weeks, maybe another next month....) but I think that just leads to more tapering/recovery miles instead of buildup/training miles.

I also think something a friend turned me onto this summer is evil... "Amish Friendship Bread" she calls it, but it's more like a poundcake kind of thing. Uses a starter (like sourdough) that you freshen up, then bake with it after dividing it into several portions with the idea being you give portions away as starters to friends and keep one for yourself. Well, I must not have enough friends cuz I always seem to have a couple of these starters going, and it's soooo good with all the variations you can do (cranberry/pecan, blueberry/pecan, cinnamon/almond, dark chocolate...). My freezer is packed with the stuff but we still eat a lot of it. I think I need to just throw it out, but my Scandinavian frugal nature won't let me. Argghh!

Hally, I also agree with the drinking. I love wine. DH loves wine. We feed each other's habit... we love nice wine and wine/food pairing. Always looking for (and frequently finding!) that perfect match. But it does encourage you to eat more, I know.

Good news: I had my cholesterol checked the other day, and the tech said I should have a full lab work up done if I want accurate readings because the table top/5-minute machine they use couldn't read mine... my HDL was over 100. Total was 198, which seems high, but with the HDL that high she said "amazing...". I may get the full workup done (triglycerides 76, but that's all it could read). I'd asked earlier about the accuracy, and they showed me all the reports, calibration checks etc, showing it is very accurate, but not for "extreme readings," which apparently I have.

Hi LaT! I like your soups... wish the rest of my clan did.

Hi Lisa, welcome! that's great you're getting back to running. Please share any vegan ideas you have. I'm not strictly, but tend in that direction.

hi everybody else, thanks Hally-Barb. I've been meaning to get back here too. just can't get caught up.

I do think this thread is helpful. Esp. with ideas like that bread, Erika. ah-hem. ooh, there's a place in town that makes a mean cranberry pecan bread. oh my goodness.

I agree with everybody about wine or whatever. euphie said something about that last month that I very much could identify with.

LaT, can't wait to try your soups. Good idea. time for goals. first goal, to set some. ha. will think about that tonight.
