Brrrrrr...are we done yet? Denver HM RR

I have not warmed up yet. Unlike Chigago, Denver had a nice cold snap just in time for the 2nd Denver Marathon and half marathon. It wasn't so bad with just the cold....but it rained, and rained, and rained and rained some more. Then the wind blew and blew and then it rained more! I am chilled to the bone. Temperature at the beginning of the race was 37. It was also 37 at the end of the race.
So, this was not my favorite run, but it was still great to get to experience it. I started out way too fast as always, but managed to get to mile 10 with my pace being about 9:30 per mile. At mile 10 I was so wet that I took my jacket off (big mistake) because it was so heavy with water. From mile 11 on I just wanted to be finished. I slowed way down...trying to get warm, speed up ...trying to get warm and finally just wishing the finish line would materialize!!! Once the run was over, I lost all dignity and started stripping wet clothes off before I even reached the car!
I am happy I ran, as I always look back and learn something from these runs...today's lesson: go out tomorrow and buy the best waterproof running jacket I can find!!!! Any suggestions?
One nice thing about the race today: Seeboygo worked a waterstation with some friends. They too froze their tails off, but they really got to experience the behind the scenes of a marathon. He thought the experience was great and is looking forward to manning another water station at a warmer race!!!
Seemongo,
Great half. Sorry you were cold. You just need to come spend a winter in Ottawa and then your perception of what is cold will change.
Glad to see your son enjoyed the race experience.
Tall
oh dear!!! ((((warm hugs for seemomgo and seeboygo))))
Seemom, Denver is that cold right now? I didn't check out the website -- is it the same course we ran over the Rocky Mountain half? Great experience for your son, rain and all. He is such a nice kid. You have a great family. No particular suggestion for a rain jacket, but will suggest a nice cuppa hot tea.
Hope to see you again sometime. I may be out in COS again in January. cj
This makes the 50's with rain at the end in Bellingham seem balmy. Way to hang tough. Now have a hot toddy!

Brrrrr!!! I got cold just reading that C-mom. Congrats on toughing it out. And a big attaboy to C-boy for volunteering! On the jacket - if you really get one that is waterproof, make sure it is made for running with a vented yoke and vents under the arms. These things aren't cheap and you want to be sure you can run in it and will be happy with it before you plunk down the big $$$.
Thaw out! You've earned your braggin rights on this race!
Skip
I agree with Skip's advice about the vents; it should be a water repellent, wind resistant, breathable fabric or you'll cook. Some useful info here[/URL" target="_blank">. My experience in the monsoon-like winters on the West Coast is that it's kind of hard to stay completely dry, but a wind-resistant material and wearing the proper undergarments will make a difference.
I gotta cheer "YAY C-Mom" for planning to dress for the elements and going outside, esp. after a race that chilled you to the bone. High 5s and hot chocolate for Seeboygo and friends.
Oh seemomgo, I hope you are warmed up and dry by now. You're tough hanging on through those conditions. Kudos to you and to Seeboygo as well! A good jacket really will make a difference, good plan.
Egret
Sorry mom. Sometimes the weather works against you like that, but you seem upbeat. Good for your son to work the station. Volunteers rock. Spareribs
Well done, Seemomgo. I hope you had a good hot soak in the tub afterward.
Ignore Tall. 37F and drenched in the wind is far colder than -10F, dry, and dressed for it. What's he know anyway? Just because he's fast... well, big and fast... well, big and fast and grumpy...
Never mind, everything he said is true.

Glad you made it, seemom. I heard something on the radio this morning about a foot of snow falling out there, and it sounded like they were talking about the marathon (or maybe it was the baseball game?). I'm not sure which is worse, but obviously you came through it!

What a great kid to help out at the aid station! And congrats to you Seemom for running a super race...nothing worse than wind and a downpour....I'll take a sunny - 40 degree day anytime over that. Congrats again

Cold ...wind ...rain ...your worst nightmare about running a marathon. But you survived and I'm sure you'll be talking about this one for years. On a positive note, your next one can hardly be any worse, weather-wise! Congrats on fighting through this. Congrats also on spending some really quality time with Seeboygo!
PJ
Wow, seemom, those conditions were terrible with cold, rain, and wind. You did a great job of toughing it out and seem to have kept an upbeat attitude. You'll have bragging rights about how tough you are for years. Congrats to you and to seeboy for his volunteering.

50 Attagyrls for toughing that one out. I'm with you, that coold rain running is not my cup of tea, especially with wind.
75 Attaboys to your son. Standing out there in that weather can be more miserable than running it. Hope they got some recognition at the awards.
Great Job.
Better luck on the weather for the next one
